"What are you doing?"
"Building a sandcastle." The tip of your tongue is peeking out as you concentrate. "What are you doing?"
"Watching you build a sandcastle."
Your answering giggle makes Malcolm smile and he can feel a light in his chest that has nothing to do with the sun.
Your sandcastle is more like a lump of semi-wet sand, piled and guided by gentle hands and decorated with little seashells you had gathered while he dozed on a lounge chair, but you look about as happy about your little creation as you might have if it were meticulously planned out and if you had used little pails to create the turrets.
"Ooh, wait, wait." You abruptly wring your hands when you're done. "I got an idea!"
Digging through the bag you brought with random items and water bottles, you find your handy little package of Kleenex and brandish it victoriously.
A thick blade of crab grass and a corner of a tissue that was folded over it at the top and held together by wetting it, and it's stuck at the very top of the sandcastle like a flag. Malcolm is laughing with his head leaned against the back of the lounger before you can finish.
"It's perfect." He says, and he means it because you made it, and there's nothing more perfect than that. It's adorable with its little windows that were carved out with your finger, a little moat filled with ocean water, and it stands proudly against the salty breeze.
"You're perfect." You admire with glittering eyes and he wonders if he's dreaming. He'd understand if it was a dream—wishful thoughts of unattainable things like love for a person like him. But it feels so real as he pulls you down next to him, enjoying the way you press your lips to his cheek, his nose, and finally his mouth.
If this was a dream, he'd happily stay asleep forever if it meant he could keep kissing you like this.
Sometimes you have to get away from the hustle and bustle of New York, and sometimes that means dragging your workaholic criminal profiler boyfriend with you so he can relax, too. Cue the summer reading-froyo-beach picnic- sipping juice directly out of the fruit-vacation he never knew he needed. ♡
how about a malcolm x reader (gender non specific preferred if possible!) where malcolm is just like not having a great day (case gone wrong/jessica being even more overbearing than usual/rough session with therapist etc) and close to having an absolute breakdown but reader does their best to try to help without infantilizing him? even the toughest profilers need cuddled and their foreheads kissed while being told they're doing their best :')
love you and ty!!

A/N: Eeee my first request! I really enjoyed writing this <3 I hope you like it. Ft. me spreading my “Malcolm loves The Hogfather” propaganda
Also sorry this was so late. School is a pain sometimes.
You knew something was wrong the moment Malcolm walked through the door of his loft. As Malcolm closed the door, he leaned forward against it, letting his forehead hit it softly with a light thunk. You turned from what you were doing on the couch to see him like that, your gaze softening slightly at the view of him.
“Hey,” you said softly, trying to avoid startling him, even though he knew you’d be there. He turned around and looked up.
“Hi,” he responded softly and smiled at you as he stripped off his coats and shoes. It wasn’t a fake smile, fortunately, but it was a soft half-hearted smile that almost immediately had fallen as soon as it had gotten there. Like he had smiled because he was grateful to see you, because he was happy that you were here, but that the negative emotions of whatever he was dealing with was simply too much, and that happiness was washed away. It broke your heart.
You got up and walked over to him, standing in front of him. All you did was open your arms slightly as a silent invitation for a hug if he wanted it. He immediately wrapped his arms around your waist, laying his head on your shoulder and gently nuzzling into your neck while holding you tightly. You quickly wrapped your arms around him and one of your hands went to stroke his hair. “You want to talk about it?” you asked softly, turning your head slightly to kiss his temple.
He let out a shaky breath. “I… I don’t know. Today was just hard.”
“What do you need? We can just stand here, we can talk, or we can cuddle. We could even watch a movie and eat snacks. Even better, we can watch the Hogfather, I know how much you love it. We can’t watch all the movies in one go this time, sadly, but we can watch the first one. And, we even have red vines.”
His head perked up slightly at the sound of that. He pulled away to look at you with a slight look of excitement on his face. He obviously was still emotionally feeling raw, but it was an improvement and you’d take it. He smiled slightly, “I’ll grab the red vines and snacks, you’ll find the movie?”
“Of course,” you pulled away mostly, but lingered long enough to kiss his forehead. It was quick but gentle, a reminder that you were here for him. You walked over to the TV to set up the movie. “By the way, I already fed Sunshine and did some chores and cleaning, so you can just relax for the night,” You looked over your shoulder as you spoke, smiling lovingly.
Soon, Malcolm was curled up in your arms with his head on your chest and snacking on red vines as you laid on the couch and watched the movie. Sunshine was freely hopping around the living room and was preening herself. You looked down at Malcolm lovingly as you ran your hands through his hair, happy that he seemed more relaxed than before.
Malcolm looked up at you. “Thank you for this, I needed this,” he sighed. “Sometimes everything, my job, my parents, my past… It gets to be too much.”
You gently grabbed his hand that was starting to shake, holding it firmly but gently. “I know… But you’re doing your best, and I’m so proud of you, you know that?”
Malcolm teared up slightly, his eyes fluttering closed briefly when you kissed his forehead again. You don’t know what happened or what goes through his mind most of the time, but you’re always here for him after a hard day to take his mind off it.
The water was cold but somehow that didn’t seem to register fully. The smell of the flowers were dominating your senses. The sickening scent of them would be the last thing you would know. You were vaguely aware of someone pushing you further into the icy water and then you were sinking. Water filling your mouth and lungs. You tried to claw your way back to the surface but the depths had other ideas.
Then you heard it.
The shouting.
The panic in someone’s voice and the splashing as they made their way into the water. Hands curled under your shoulders and you were roughly pulled to the surface and dragged out of the warm. Warm lips were pressed against your forehead and you coughed up the painfully cold water. A blanket, something that should’ve provided warmth and comfort was draped over you, but you felt neither of those things. You rested your head against the person’s chest as they started shouting for help. You looked up at them, their face a blur but slowly coming into view.
“Ma-”
That was all you managed before the darkness claimed you.
*
You let out a groan as you slowly returned to the waking world. A soft beeping greeted you and you closed your eyes at the bright light. You heard someone move next to you and a hand placed itself on your shoulder.
“Easy,” said a familiar voice, “take it easy.”
“Malc?”
You opened your eyes again and looked up into the familiar face of Malcolm. He gave you a small smile but you could see the worry clear in his eyes. You tried to give him a reassuring smile as you propped yourself up but winced as you saw the look on his face. Worry was etched across it and he said,
“I thought I lost you.”
“I-”
You started coughing and rubbed at your throat. Immediately Malcolm poured you a glass of water. He raised it to your lips and said,
“Small sips. Take it easy. You did almost-”
He cut himself off and looked away. You lowered his hand, putting the glass back on the side table. With his hand now free Malcolm linked his fingers with yours.
“Richard?” you asked
“Under arrest.” he replied
“So not dead?”
“No. No. He,” Malcolm cut himself off before saying slowly, “he’s alive.”
“And how long have I been unconscious for?”
The way Malcolm slumped told you that was the wrong question to ask. He ran his thumb over your knuckles.
“I thought I lost you,” he said softly, “I’ve lost so many people I don’t know what I would’ve done if I lost you too.”
“Even though I’m-” you cut yourself off, “I’m me.”
“Yes.”
Your eyes widened at the seriousness in Malcolm’s voice. You propped yourself up further and reached over and cupped Malcolm’s cheek. He leant into your touch and you said softly,
“I definitely think it’s time for me to give up this life.”
“And what will you do?”
“Oh I’m sure I’ll find something. Maybe it’s time to leave New York.”
You and Malcolm locked gazes and for a moment everything seemed to slow down. Then you moved forward and pressed your lips against his. You closed your eyes and Malcolm’s widened. Fuck, maybe you had misread his signals. Just as you were about to pull away Malcolm’s hand moved to the back of your head, keeping you in place. The two of you broke the kiss, gasping for air.
“I love you,” he said, “so please, don’t leave.”
“I don’t know,” you said teasingly, “why don’t you kiss me again and see if you can change my mind.”
*
“There,” you finished taping up the box and put your hands on your hips, “that’s the last of them.”
You looked around Joseph’s empty flat. It felt strange seeing it so empty. You had offered it to George but he didn’t want it. Probably contained too many bad memories for him. Still, it was weird to close this chapter of your life. Malcolm wrapped an arm around your waist and pressed a brief kiss against your cheek.
“You alright?” he asked
“I will be.”
“And are you sure you want to do this?”
“Move in with you? Definitely.”
“And the trial-”
“I thought we agreed not to talk about that,” you reminded him, “at least until we’re closer to the date.”
At the sound of a beeping car horn Malcolm bent down and lifted up the last box.
“Come down when you’re ready ok?” he said, “take as much time as you need.”
You pressed a kiss against his lips as he left you alone. You took a deep breath as you did one final walk around your old flat. Malcolm had been so welcoming and understanding which you weren’t quite expecting. Your old life was in the past and it was something you were glad to leave behind. The future was looking bright. You were going to complete your degree and then, well, maybe travel? You almost lost your life and you still had so much of the world to see.
Maybe you could persuade Malcolm to take some time off. He probably needed it.
You stopped at the front door and took one last look at the empty flat. You flicked the light switch off and closed and locked the door.
Time to leave the past in the past and move forward into the light.
“I don’t think you and Joseph fully understood how much you fucked over my life,” said Dick conversationally, “I just wanted a normal life and then you two had to come in and ruin it.”
“You could’ve said no,” you muttered weakly, “you didn’t have to-”
“Yes I did,” hissed Dick, “you think that Joseph would just let someone walk away after introducing them to his world? I had no choice.”
“You don’t know that.”
“Yes I do,” Dick’s voice broke slightly but he quickly coughed and covered it up, “you always wanted to be part of this.”
“It was good money.”
“You have no love of art.”
“You bastard-”
You tried to punch him but you were still too weak. You fell limply into the water again and Dick just grimaced. He continued to lay flowers down and said,
“Despite what it may seem like, I don’t hate you. I didn’t want you to wake up. For you to just slip into a sleep that you wouldn’t wake up from.”
“You could just let me go.”
“No. You see, you have to go in order for me to be free from this life.”
“Why?”
“Because you were meant to be there when Joseph had his heart attack,” Dick said bitterly, “if you weren’t sick then it would’ve been you that saw what happened to him. It would’ve been you that feels this way.”
“You got him out,” you said, “you got him to a hospital.”
“He still died.”
“He would’ve died-”
“Don’t you finish that fucking sentence,” Dick snapped, “don’t you fucking dare. This is what I need to do and then I can rest easy.”
*
“You think she’s going to die?” asked Dani
“Yes,” Malcolm said as he ran about your flat, “I do. This is all my fault.”
By now they were all in your flat. Malcolm was practically tearing it apart for any clues that might help him find you. He couldn’t let you die. He wouldn’t let you die. He wouldn’t let anyone else he cared about get hurt.
“Look kid,” Gil gripped Malcolm’s shoulders, “take it easy. You won’t be of any help to l/n in this state.”
“If you’re convinced that Richard is the killer then why are we at your girlfriend’s apartment?” asked JT, “why aren’t we at his?”
“Because,” Malcolm said, ignoring the comment about you being his girlfriend, “he kills people in a manner that is relevant to them. Paintings that are linked to his victims. We’ll find that here. We just need to keep looking.”
“But l/n is an art student,” said Dani, “there’s got to be hundreds of painting related things in her flats.”
“No,” Malcolm shook his head, “no it’ll be something… I’ll know it when I see it. Please, we’ve got to continue looking. We’re wasting time!”
Malcolm pulled himself free from Gil’s grip and began to look through your flat again. Gil nodded at Dani and JT and they joined in the search, although with less enthusiasm than Malcolm. Malcolm paused when he reached one of your sketch books. You usually let him flick through them but that one you didn’t. You would slap his hand away and give him a teasing smile.
“Just another secret of mine,” you’d say, “to add to the collection.”
Still, Malcolm was sure that you’d forgive him if it meant he’d save your life. Malcolm took a deep breath and opened the book. At first it just looked like another one of your sketch books. However, the further Malcolm got through it, the more he realised what the drawings were of.
“You found something there, kid?” asked Gil
“Yes.”
“Fucking hell,” said JT as he looked over Malcolm’s shoulder, “those are-”
“Drawings of the murder portraits,” finished Malcolm, “which must mean…”
He turned over the page and grimaced. He trailed a finger over the drawing. A copy of the painting of Ophelia.
“I wonder,” he said, “what made her change the location of it.”
“You recognise it?” asked Gil
“Yes, don’t you?” Malcolm threw the book to the side and bolted towards the door, “now we’ve got to hurry. We still might be able to save her!”

A/N: Got my period for the first time in 3 years and wrote this within the hour. I guess I can have motivation to write sometimes.
You laid on Malcolm’s bed curled up in a ball, wearing a hoodie and hiding under a pile of blankets, facing the window. This was how Malcolm found you when he got home. He couldn’t see your face, or really any of you. If he didn’t know better, he would’ve thought there was a just a huge pile of blankets on his bed. He walked around the bed so that he could see you and sat on the edge of the bed. You looked up, your eyes meeting his and smiled weakly. “Hey,” you said softly, your throat raspy from not talking for a while.
“Hey,” Malcolm said with softness in his gaze, smiling back at you with the gentle smile he reserved mostly for you. “Are you okay? Or did you just want to become one with the blankets?” he joked, but you could see the concern in his eyes.
“I’m okay. Sort of. I started my period today,” you said with a frown. You tilted your head up to look at him better. “I hope you don’t mind me taking over your bed for the time being.”
He chuckled softly, shaking his head. “No, I don’t mind. You know I never mind,” he leaned over you slightly, gently stroking your cheek. You leaned into his hand. “Is there anything I can do for you?”
“The usual.”
“Okay, I’ll be right back then,” he said, smiling at you again before standing up and walking away.
When he came back, he came with a tray of your favorite snacks, especially the ones you prefer on your period. The tray also had a little cup with some medication in it. He moved a cup of water and a cup of tea that was on the tray to the bedside table. He left again and came back with an electric weighted heating pad, which he plugged in.
You sat up with a soft grunt and put the heating pad on your stomach. You took the tray into your lap before eating some of the snacks. “Do you need anything else? Do you need me to pick anything up, do you need any menstrual products?”
You smiled softly. “No, I’m okay though. Thank you, though. All I need is for you to hand me the glass of water and then maybe cuddle with me a bit later.”
“I can do that,” he chuckled, handing you the glass of water. You took the medication and continued to eat and drink the tea he made you. When you were done, he grabbed it all from you, putting it on the bedside table again. “I’ll be right back; I’m going to go change.”
He came back and laid down next to you. He was wearing a blue Harvard sweatshirt and a pair of sweatpants. He was on his side facing you and opened his arms so you could cuddle into his side. Once you adjusted the heating pad and got comfortable, he wrapped his arms around you and sighed contently. He kissed the crown of your head, letting his eyes drift close.
You nuzzled your face into his neck. “I love you,” you said quietly. “Thank you, for all of this. I really appreciate all you do for me.”
“Of course, it’s the least I can do,” he kissed your head again. “I love you, too. More than anything,” he spoke softly, rubbing up and down your back in a soothing manner.
You eventually drifted to sleep. You knew Malcolm wouldn’t, but it was still nice to just be in each other’s presence and rest.
