I had a chance today to stream the John Krautner solo album, forthcoming on Burger Records. Krauter is a founding member of two other Burger-related bands, The Go and Conspiracy of Owls. "Fun with Gum Vol. 1" is the name of his solo joint, and both the title and the songs within pay homage to the bubblegum pop sounds of the late 60s. (And considering the rich history of PG-13 to R-rated double entendre in the bubblegum subgenre, I wondered if the title might also be a veiled reference to the good ol' "Hey, I sat in gum" prank.) Anyway, I thought it was a fun listen overall. I was digging this more than the Conspiracy of Owls LP, but probably not quite as much on the first spin as the bubblegum stylings of Cozy on that album that they dropped in 2014. The track "Northwood" is the hit in my book. It makes reference to mall arcades and copping "Masters of Metal" on cassette at Woolworth's. Spring break, adolescent style y'all!
