The John L. Nelson Project

Musician. Composer. Bandleader.

John L. Nelson is perhaps best known as Prince’s father, yet he was a Jazz performer and most importantly, a prolific composer in his own right. For many years he intended to collaborate on this release with his eldest daughter, Sharon L. Nelson.

After the passing of her father, and then the untimely passing of her brother, Sharon decided to complete the recording at

Paisley Park in honor of her father’s 100th birthday.

When Prince was asked about his father during an interview, he was quoted as saying, “Our personalities are a lot alike, but his music is like nothing I’ve ever heard before.  It’s more complex.  A lot of beautiful melodies are hidden beneath the complexity.”

John L. Nelson was a prolific Jazz musician most notably known as the father of the musical genius Prince Rogers Nelson. John L. Nelson wrote and composed many songs which were never recorded until now. John L. Nelson was the catalyst to Prince's musical inspiration, and this project is the first recording produced in Paisley Park since Prince's passing.

I don't think Joe Jackson was a bad father per se because he never says anything bad about his kids but he also never acknowledges their pain or what they say and always justifies it in some way, claiming that they became better off than most kids.

I think the way Joe sees it is that he helped them get out of poverty and so he did his duty as a father byt he got them working at a young age to do so.

When Michael says he loves his dad but doesn't know him...I think it's because of that distant and harsh relationship as a disciplinatarian.

I think even with how Joe talks about kids in general, it doesn't particularly sound like he likes kids tbh.

He doesn't spend time with his kids outside of work and business.

So really what Michael is missing out is having a dad that shows affection or even pride of his accomplishments. Even when Joe talks about him, it's all matter of fact. The man also has a very harsh looking face

Maybe this is unfair, but I'm just comparing this to Prince's father and the relationship there with Prince and his father, there's a huge difference.

Sure John does take credit to his son's work but in a way that says "My son is like me" and he says it really proud and affectionate.

John sounds so warm and proud and happy that I'm just wondering why his relationship with his son became estranged in the first place. He did mention that he and his son do hang out beyond playing the piano, they both like to run and play, chase girls, get some candy, and eat some cookies.

It may have been against his wishes but I really do adore the interview both he and his daughter Sharon had with Current Affairs. Unless it's an act, Prince seems to have a very warm and normal family.
