The bo'suns (the usual pronunciation of Boatswain) had a lot of responsibilities on the ships, most famously, they were in charge of punishing offenders against the ships' (and in this case, the Navy's) rules and articles. It's generally the bo'sun who'll be doing any lashing necessary, and in the show, it's Mr Johnson who ties the cat-o-nines that Magnus Manson, Tom Hartnell & Cornelius Hickey are whipped with, though I'm unsure if he also does the whipping or if Mr Lane, his boss, does it.

Crazy to think about how the first time I watched the terror I thought Irving and Jopson were the same person until episode 8 and now when I watch it I see a 3 pixel smudge in the corner and go "yay John Lane my best friend John Lane :]"

Back when I finally had to write out all my ideas for cluster playlist posts, this wound up being the only idea that never made the cut. Ever since Magnus Manson's davechella playlist dropped, I thought it would be funny to finally release this last cluster post idea so here we are. I thought this project was done and yet.... just one more.
