Then there’s this bit where the high-necked, lace-gloved Fricka is very calculatedly like, “You know what has never failed to get Wotan’s attention? A little bit of ANKLE.” And, granted there’s a lot to review in a five hour opera, but I don’t think any of the critics did justice to the amount of humor in this version of the Fricka-Wotan blowout.
The first production photo that I am aware of from the 2018 revival of the Keith Warner production of Das Rheingold at the Royal Opera. From the ROH website; no photographer seems to be credited. The Ring Cycle opens in Covent Garden tonight (September 24, 2018).
I’m not positive of all the singers and characters but I believe, from left to right, they are Sarah Connolly (Fricka), John Lundgren (Wotan), Markus Eiche (Donner), Andrew Staples (Froh), Alan Oke (Loge), and Lise Davidsen (Freia).
