JOHN LYLE is a very talented Canadian musician, song-writer and friend.
I would like to introduce John and his music to my fellow Tumblrs.
Below, are the lyrics of one of his songs, A Long Long Time Ago,
followed by what we could call his un-liner notes - read it, and you’ll see what
I mean. The link will transport you to his CBC page, where the opening song
that you’ll be hearing, is this very one. Enjoy.
Took a flight on the back of the night
Took a stand on an ocean of sand
Why I did I’ll never know
How am I what I came to deny
Not surprised by the look in their eyes
Life was cheap at the end of my feet
Where unknown shadows had to grow
How am I what I came to deny
Such was I like a wheel on the fly
Way behind with no shot at the line
Hobbled down a slippery road
How am I what I came to deny
The centre of the song is about having no centre, because the song is about the past’s effect upon a fictitious entity, the imagined self. The past itself being unreal, can have no effect on anything, much less another falsehood. The song is about someone who doesn’t exist, even in the here and now, living a flywheel existence. I hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I did pretending to have created it.
