Perhaps fairly typical of the naval instructors of the 1840′s was Mr. Kemmie, who held the post in H.M.S. Cuba, “a nervous, sensitive, excitable man, who came to sea after a university career and always wished he hadn’t”. He suffered badly from seasickness, and was totally incapable of keeping order among the spirited young ruffians with whom he had to deal. [...]
