Egotrip, John Michel & Anthony James (2025)

Kanye West’s chipmunk era is one of the most revered in hip-hop; it is surprising more haven’t tried to imitate it. Egotrip is just that, an imitation, but it shows the dangers of being a copycat. Any College Dropout similarities are purely superficial; Michel’s raps aren’t insightful, substantial or charismatic, James’ beats aren’t particularly well chosen nor emphatically mixed. A vibe, and little more.

Oates and Michel have been playing together for more than 20 years, which is evident in this easygoing, yet steadfast performance. Though just a duo, their sound is full of harmonies and rhythms that enhance the songwriting.
