Brooklyn Metal Trio Sannhet Pulverize Rough Trade NYC on Saturday Night
Sannhet – Rough Trade NYC – March 7, 2020
Sannhet have been described as experimental metal. That may sound like a vaguely colored cop-out, but it’s actually an invitation: How your brain and viscera respond to their music depends a bit on what you lean toward, whether it’s the blackest end of the metal spectrum, or the industrial end of the post-rock spectrum, or shoegaze-y angst, or space-rock, or somewhere in between or adjacent. They can sound like all of that, or none of it. But they’re heavy. And so invigorating. Their name does mean truth, after all.
At Rough Trade NYC on Saturday night, the Brooklyn trio—John Refano on guitar and effects, Emmett Ceglia on drums and samples, AJ Annunziata on bass and other things—roared through a headlining set of strong, cortex-ripping instrumental music that appeared to include some new tunes and choice selections from their last few releases, including last year’s Short Life EP. They can do the mind-bender stuff with the best of ’em, but what stood out were two things in particular. First, that they can jam so econo: Sannhet favor shorter song structures that seem to cram post-rock soar, hard-metallic-sounding modes, psychedelic drone abandon and trippy sludge-metal into tunes that don’t often pass the seven-minute mark but deliver the goods as if you’ve been paid off by a journey three times that long. Second, that the visuals serve as a fourth member of the band. Sannhet do their thing bathed in lost-planet spooky lighting, or appear to be in a haze, or seem to be beaming in from a don’t-adjust-your-TV-set netherworld, or let the strobes do the talking as the drums, bass and guitar build to full-strength hurricane squall. We were plenty pulverized in under an hour. —Chad Berndtson | @Cberndtson

As far as instrumental metal music goes, for Dan, Brooklyn, NY's Sannhet is the gold standard. Sannhet's music effectively captivates and envelopes the listener predominantly without vocals, all while being raw, gritty, pummeling, and even redemptive at times. Dan sat down with John to talk about Sannhet, their latest EP Short Life, and working with Josh Strawn on the track The Eternal. John also blows Dan's mind when they discuss the band's light and projection show that they incorporate into their live performances.
