“The ABC Café/Red and Black,” US 2nd National Tour, San Francisco, 1990. Craig Oldfather as Enjolras, John Reuss as Marius, unknown Grantaire.
Craig’s Enjolras sounds to me like “Michael Maguire lite.” A robust, masculine baritone and with a very American, GI-ish vibe to his performance. This isn’t surprising, since in 1990 Michael’s performance was probably still considered the benchmark for Enjolras in US productions. That said, Craig lacks Michael’s sheer vocal power and charisma; I wouldn’t call his Enjolras especially memorable based on this clip alone. Still, his voice is a handsome one, and maybe he was more compelling when seen onstage.
John’s Marius sounds excellent, with a warm, rich baritenor voice so typical of ‘80s and early ‘90s Marii, which I wish were heard more often in the role today. A likeable Grantaire and a strong-sounding ensemble cap off the performance.
