Bruce Lacey and John Sewell made a neat short movie, regrettably off our beat, called Everybody's Nobody (1966), where a proud exporter demonstrates his robot machine, called the 'Mobile Absurd Nonentity' - MAN for short. The joke applies neatly to Guinness and Sellers, as to Norman Wisdom, Benny Hill and Charlie Drake, all of whom delight in multiple roles - Here Comes Everybody being also Along Went Nobody. Other stars have been men of a thousand faces but the English today show a special obsession with, and gift for, chameleon impersonations, people who are everybody and nobody, anonymous and two-, po-, pie- or x-faced, mere samples of types whose differences are accidents of accent, status, sex, clothes or ludicrous mannerism, making each of us a lonely crowd, alienated, fragmented, replaceable, and pointless.
