Half the Teen Wolf fics wouldn't exist without Sheriff Stilinski working the night shift and I'll die on this hill
Stiles is such a fucking it girl. He hangs around a bunch of mysterious brooding hot people and is always at the center of some murder mystery and or crime, which he is usually the one to solve because he is smart as fuck. And his dad is the sheriff. He is the center of Beacon Hills and runs an entire fucking wolf pack and a half and is also the anchor for one of the alphas.
It girl
whatever noah might’ve thought was coming when derek started his big, deep-breathed, still-hesitant confession, it’s definitely not the disclosure he expected.
“werewolves,” noah says, and derek nods. “you’re saying that, you… what does that mean?”
but there’s already something awful and defeated on the kid’s face. he nods, once, a new slump to his shoulders, and noah says, “now wait a second. i didn’t say i don’t wanna hear it. i’m just... it’s a lot to take in, that’s all. but i do wanna hear about it, if you still wanna tell me. what that means, or...”
but something's already clicking into place a little too neatly.
“that fire,” noah says, and derek blanches. “that’s why...”
oh, christ. of course it was.
and derek glares down at nothing. breathing in, and out, exaggeratedly slow.
then he says, “it wasn’t just werewolves who got trapped that night. my cousins were human.”
looking back up at noah, too desperately.
and noah’s been going about this all wrong, clearly. if derek really thinks the county sheriff needs convincing that what happened that night was a tragedy. there were kids who died in that fire. derek’s mom, noah knew her. it was a blow to the goddamn community. hell, talia was the goddamn community. she could get anyone to warm up to anyone.
the look on derek's face is devastating. and of course it is.
stiles freezes up the same way when someone mentions claudia.
“i’m sorry,” noah says, and derek stares at him. “your family didn’t deserve that. any of it. and i should’ve done a lot more after the fact to protect you. for you, and your sister.”
but he’s overwhelming this poor kid, derek’s shuddering. noah shakes his head, says, “i know it’s not all that much consolation now, but there’s gonna be a restraining order. any argent wants to come near you, or contact you... i promise you, from now on, it’s gonna be different.”
but that’s not what all this is about. not this whole confession, not really.
no, it’s not derek who’s in danger right now.
not this time.
it’s those two missing kids. reyes, and boyd, derek’s been trying to track them by scent. and apparently, he followed that trail right to the argent house.
“i don’t know where they are now,” derek says. “and i know i can’t prove it to you, but i know they were there for a while. and, from what i can tell… from scent, and from personal experience. i know that they were held there, and that... they were being tortured. probably with electricity.”
“with electricity,” noah says faintly. “you’re saying, chris argent’s been taking kids captive, and tasering them until they finally...”
it sure as hell sounds unbelievable. but there’s too much on derek’s face.
and... this kid must have one hell of a sense memory if he can recognize a torture method just from smelling it.
but smell can be funny like that. and it’s only then that noah finally takes in the other part of what derek’s told him.
from what i can tell… from scent, and from personal experience.
“now, hold on just a minute,” noah says. but his head’s already pounding with something like rage. “you’re not saying, chris argent captured you...”
but derek shakes his head quickly. “it wasn’t chris. not in my case, anyway.”
“but the rest of it,” noah says. derek shrugs. “that’s all true? derek. who the hell else in town is a part of this? what exactly did they do to you?”
tasers. is that it? overgrown idiots, playing with tasers. torturing kids, with...
“it’s not a taser,” derek says. “not at the argent house, anyway. they kind of... wire you up to it.”
“they...” noah says, and derek says, “but we can heal. it’s more likely to have scared them than to have left lasting injuries.”
“you mean, you don’t have any lasting injuries,” noah says. “is that right? how long does it last, exactly?”
“well, we can’t heal while we’re being electrocuted,” derek says, casual as anything. “it disrupts something, i guess. i don’t know what exactly. but as soon it’s over, everything just goes... back to normal. you just... might remember it, sometimes.”
but he looks sorry to have even said that. and even sorrier when noah says, “derek. i can’t believe i have to say this, but if someone’s been torturing...”
“i’m fine,” derek says, and noah’s throat heats up, thinking of stiles’ face. the beating he’d obviously been through, and the no, dad, i’m fine.
even then, he played it down until noah stopped asking, and just held him, wrapped him up safe.
there’s some things you can’t get from talking. no matter how many expert techniques you might have for getting to the truth.
“i want you to tell me,” noah says. “if anything like that happens from now on, i promise you, i wanna know. even if you’re fine, or healed...”
he lays a hand on derek’s shoulder. feels it shuddering.
jesus christ, this kid. and he’s only telling noah about it now because he’s sure someone else was subjected to it. erica reyes, and vernon boyd, and now they’re missing. if that twisted family didn’t just take the torturing a little too far on one or both of them, and panic, and hide the bodies somewhere.
and that’s if they’re not actively destroying them.
“can you show me where you were?” he says, and derek looks at him. “where in the house… and if they’re still there, you’d be able to sense that?”
derek hesitates, and nods. “if they’re still there? it’ll be obvious.”
“but i’d probably miss it,” noah says, and derek makes an attempt to be tactful. “because any human would, i mean.”
“our senses are heightened,” derek says, with some relief. “and we can track heartbeats. so if they’re still there? i can tell you immediately.”
“if their hearts are beating, that is,” noah says, and derek’s face goes grim.
“and if they’re not, there are other ways.”
“there’d be more of a scent,” noah says, and derek nods.
and finding that basement. but derek stops at the staircase leading down to it.
he looks punched, suddenly. like he’s found a body already.
“down there?” noah says, but derek shakes his head. he takes a long breath, and then he says, “but it would’ve been… and by now, you’d definitely know.”
dread rising in noah, but he says, “about this case?”
“stiles,” derek says, and noah stares at him. “but even if it was the same night… you would know, if something like that happened to him.”
“something like,” noah says, but he can see it already. of course this is what happened to stiles. of course, some goddamn argent… because of course stiles would never’ve let them get away with what they were doing. hell, knowing stiles, he probably got the whole thing on video.
“the night of the game?” noah says, and then, “and it happened on these stairs. that’s what you’re saying.”
“is stiles alright?” derek says, and noah says, “he will be. but right now, i need you to tell me exactly what happened here.”
there’s pain on the stairs, and panic, and adrenaline. shock, and disbelief at what was happening.
“you can really track all of that?” noah says, but he believes it. there’s too much new guilt on derek’s face.
more pain at the foot of the stairs. a lot more pain. and panic, and… helplessness. the outrage from the stairs turns into helplessness, and claustrophobia, and distant disbelief. all smeared with someone standing over him, and beating him, so smug and angry that once he reaches the spot, derek looks murderous. but then he half-bows, like he can see it happening, like he can somehow still shield stiles from it. or the shadow of him that’s still left here, the stiles who’s still trapped in that moment, still panicking.
derek’s head dips down, meets nothing that noah can see. and noah doesn’t have to smell emotions to know that he’s sorry. hell, he’s practically mourning.
“stiles is okay,” noah says, and derek looks up at him. “he has some nasty-looking bruising, and he’s clearly been shaken up by something. but he’s still just as stubborn, and just as brave. i don’t think there’s a force in the world strong enough to beat that out of him.”
that seems to reassure derek, at least. at least a little bit. he nods, and straightens up again. maybe hitting that layer of argent smugness on his way back up, because he’s gone right back to furious. he takes another long breath, and says, “his scent isn’t in the rest of the room as much. there’s still pain, but it’s not his.”
because it’s vernon boyd’s pain. erica reyes’ pain. as they were strung up, and electrocuted.
you’ve gotta be careful with that stuff. the wiring in some of these older buildings can be a real hazard.
noah’s seen it happen. an awful, unpreventable accident.
but at least no one’ll be trapped in this one. not this time, not if it spreads fast enough.
not if someone alerts the station in time.
“why don’t you go check on stiles now?” noah says. “i’ll meet you at home.”
derek looks at him, and says, “what are you gonna do?”
“oh, just some paperwork i’ve been putting off,” noah says. “shouldn’t take long.”
it’s good to have a plan. he’s practically whistling.
“stick around for dinner, will you?” he calls after derek, and smiles. “i’m thinking of trying a new recipe.”
the sirens start ringing out just as noah fires up the grill.

I just know that the residents of BH thought that Eli was somehow the biological son of Stiles AND a Derek at the same time.
People there had seen the craziest shit per week. they just saw that little replica of Stiles running around the station playing hide and seek with the Sheriff while Derek is in work and where like “Yeah, that checks out”.
