Artist Profile: John Treacy
John Treacy has been a towering presence in the Kilkenny music scene for the best part of a decade. Taking cues from Jeff Buckley, Jimi Hendrix and other musical legends beginning with ‘J’, John’s screaming lead guitar lines and fiery solos continue to rock venues around Kilkenny. He currently plays lead guitar as part of The Great Shakes, who also feature in Volume 1 of Marble City Sounds, but here he is absolutely an artist in his own right. John has been known to lend his own slant to many a classic number, but his own songs stand tall too. Sitting somewhere between swagger and soul, he utilizes his 12-string acoustic and beloved electric by turns to deliver his powerful melodies and nimble guitar work. If you haven’t already, make a date to see John live; like his trademark Fender Strat, he is electric.
What musician/band should people listen out for in Kilkenny?
Thomas Donoghue, I've heard him in different bands over the years and it's all been good!
What's the best thing about Kilkenny from a musical perspective?
The fact that it's so accessible [from a people point of view], there's a vast well of talent that a musician from outside can draw on. We've got a high standard of musicianship in Kilkenny. You can make lots of friends!
What's your favourite Kilkenny venue?
Billy Byrnes. I love the atmosphere, the people working there, the people that go there, everything about it!
What/who are your influences?
Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Buckley (they're both number one), Tom Petty, Neil Young, The Smiths, Lykke Li (something modern!), Frank Zappa, The Stones, Beatles, Dylan, Led Zeppelin.
How would you classify your style of music?
I don't what it is, but I'm going to say...jazz. *laughs* Seriously, I'd say something like "alternative blues-rock", but pretty diverse at that!
Favourite album and favourite artist?
Jeff Buckley, and his album 'Grace'
