John was trying to fight the urge to cough, afraid of what might come out if he did. Even the mere thought of possibly needing to go to a hospital put him on edge. Then he felt hands on his face and his first instinct was to flinch, to jerk away from the touch. But then he heard the slightly shaky voice -- Elijah -- and he sounded angry? Bile rose up in his throat and this time there was no stopping the cough. John managed to turn his head away from Elijah, just barely, and coughed up the bile, his throat raw by the time the fit was done. Was Elijah angry at him? ... But he would be able to understand that point of view, after all, John had done something stupid; that much he knew. He’d waited too long to deposit money and instead of just waiting for the next day he went out.. and “I got mugged.” yeah, that had happened and it was his fault for being so careless.
He gave a small head shake, “N-no.. I’ve seen them around..” he muttered before feeling the gentle touch to his lip. John closed his eyes when he felt Elijah’s lips on his cheek; that action enough to tell him that if Elijah was angry at him at least he wasn’t too angry. He nodded at the comments and tensed up at the mention of a hospital but the way his ribs and back protested the action was enough to tell John that maybe the hospital would be necessary. He didn’t say anything as Elijah carried him to the car, feeling some of the anxiety start to leave him -- the adrenaline going with it and bringing his injuries to his attention. John reached for Elijah once he settled him into the passenger side, looking up at him with pleading eyes “Don’t go..” he was terrified. More so than he had been in a long time and he hated it, he hated the way his voice shook but he didn’t want to be alone.
John only relaxed again when Elijah entered the car next to him and started the engine. He carefully turned to look at the other, keeping an eye on him as he rested his head on the cold window, the temperature providing some relief from the pain. His fingers gently curled towards Elijah’s as he drove them away, John wasn’t sure if they were heading home or to the hospital as he refused to take his eyes off Elijah.. except when they fluttered closed on their own accord, some times the bumps of the road aggravating his back.
