John Deakin and the Lure of Soho.
When finding yourself exhausted by the High Street big firms and shoppers, there's no better hide away than The Photographers' Gallery. After a day at Red's office, I ventured myself into this cozy and charming gallery, a real hidden treasure in the heart of Soho. I was about to miss this fantastic show, when I glimpsed some weird looking paintings out of the corner of my eye, on my way out. A selection of artists' photographs, street and fashion shots for Vogue make this exhibition a captivating portrait of Soho and London in its golden days. It is refreshing seeing Deakin's eclectic body of work on display, ranging from collage, painting and photographs that makes this a warm and diverse exhibition. The indelible and common element that ties together Deakin's beautiful prints is undoubtedly the grain that adds credibility as well as physicality to the images; something irreplaceable that I will forever seek in digital photographs. While looking at Restaurant' signs and their owners, captured while posing in a carefree attitude, a range of more staged shots reveal the bohemian lifestyle of Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud. Deakin seems to me a virtuous forerunner of Richard Avedon.
