Lovers in a Dangerous Time

Note on the text: I used John Le Carre’s Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy as published in 2011 by Penguin Books.

Love is, in some sense, an anarchic force. No matter what box we have be put into, either by the world or by ourselves, love can break us out. We as human being are built to love each other, we are built to connect, and through that we can find a way to true freedom.

Irina is a female spy for the Soviet Union who is looking to defect to the West. She has fallen in love with an English spy, Thomas, to whom she passes along information regarding the Soviets, and who is helping her relocate to England. However she before she can fully evacuate she realizes that she has been made and in her final letter to Thomas talks about how loving him has set her free and given her a greater sense of freedom than she ever thought was possible because repressive environment in which she was raised: 

In my heart I am free. You have seen only the bad things in me- the drink, the fear, the lies we live. But deep inside me burns a new and blessed light. I used to think that the secret world was a separate place and that I was banished to an island of only half people. But, Thomas, it is not separate. God has shown me that it is here, right in the middle of the real world all around us, and we only have to open the door and step outside to be free. Thomas, you must always long for the light which I have found. It is called love” (64).

Even in the most repressive regimes, true freedom can be found through love. 

Love can free us from any cage we find ourselves in. Even the simple love of a friend can free us from the cage that we put ourselves into. Think of how it feels when we think we are unlovable and then find a friend who can show us that that is not true. How even such a relatively simple type of love can impact. Love, in all its forms, is a powerful thing.
