#johnmckracken (American, 1934–2011) #glow2004 Polyester resin, fiberglass, plywood. McKracken's signature works are richly monochromatic planks that lean casually against the wall. He developed this form in 1966 when he stopped making three-dimensional painted canvases and embraced the readymade materials of boards and plywood that he presented with little alteration. Because of this, McKracken is often grouped with Minimalist artists like #donaldjudd #danflavin and #carlandre who also used industrial materials and stark geometries. But McKracken believed his highly finished works exceeded their materiality: they existed "between worlds," not only linking floor (the realm of sculpture) and wall (that of painting) but also matter and spirit, body and mind. 😌🌅 #amtrakcoaststarlight #traincation #thirdleg (at Portland Art Museum)
