I’m about to tell a very Philly story that probably only means anything if you’re in Philly. So today I volunteered to go pick up some 25 Turkeys that were being donated to the civic to give to local families. We had done a quick fundraiser to buy all the supplies for a shelf-stable, no-other ingredients needed dinner, and out local councilman paid for the turkeys, which we were told to go pick up at the Acme down off Delaware Ave.
I and another board member drove down and go inside the grocery store. First we try the help desk, they send us to deli, deli sends us to meat, meat finds a manager, all because no one has heard the name of our contact and has no record of 25 turkeys being paid for. We call the board member who made the deal, try to figure out if he sent us to the wrong Acme, why no one has any idea about the councilman providing us with turkeys.
Until we figure out it’s not from the councilman, it’s from the local 98 electric boss - JOHNNY DOC. He has his guys in the parking lot with something like 800 turkeys and boxes of meal stuff in a tractor trailer.
WE ENDED UP LITERALLY GETTING FROZEN TURKEYS OFF THE BACK OF A TRUCK COURTESY OF FUCKING JOHNNY DOC.
Not only that, we think we’re getting 25, but they have us down for 50. More calls to councilman’s office to try to figure out if there’s two groups supposed to get 25 or what. We convinced them to let us leave with just 25.
Drive back to the community center to unload, only to run into more local 98 guys dropping off more meals for the 184th rep elect, Elizabeth Fiedler. Were the other 25 supposed to go to them? Nope. Mystery. So now our stuff is not exactly mixed together, but all in the civic’s office. I’m going back in a few hours to bag and distribute.
You think you’re getting a meal from your church, but it’s really from the civic, but partially paid for by your councilman, but not really because it was all paid for by Johnny fucking Doc.
Anyway. Philly keeping on being Philly.
