Handler just loves to put me on a pedestal. ❤ . Actually, this statue is Johnny Bench, who played for the Cincinnati Reds for 16 years. . . . Baseball Hall of Famer-Johnny Bench
The 1970 Topps baseball card set is considered one of the more iconic issues from the late 1960s/early 1970s period. With 714 total cards issued, the 1970 set featured Hall of Famers like Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, and Roberto Clemente alongside rising young stars like Johnny Bench, Tom Seaver, and Nolan Ryan. This week’s artifact from the @YogiBerraMuseum is the #baseball #Yogi launched for the 358th, and final, home run of his illustrious career. It was a two-run shot off Kansas City @Athletics pitcher #MoeDrabowsky in the bottom of the 4th inning at @YankeeStadium on September 21, 1963. Significantly, Yogi started the game at catcher that day (he had been playing a lot of outfield in his later years) so the homer lifted his final career total to 305 hit as a catcher. The record stood for nearly 17 years when on July 15, 1980, @johnnybench_5 hit his 306th HR as a catcher. The next day, Yogi sent Bench a telegram that contained one of his most beloved Yogi-isms (in capitals here): Congratulations on breaking my home run record last night. I ALWAYS THOUGHT THE RECORD WOULD STAND UNTIL IT WAS BROKEN. It couldn’t happen to a nicer guy. Best of luck the rest of the season, but take it easy on Dale and the Pirates. Maybe we’ll see you in October. Yogi Of course, Bench’s record only stood until it was broken as well. And the current top four all-time HR hitting catchers are @mikepiazza31 396, #CarltonFisk 351, #JohnnyBench 326 and Yogi 305. Come see Yogi’s last home run ball and so much more! ⚾️ 8️⃣ (at Yogi Berra Museum & Learning Center) https://www.instagram.com/p/CgQLnXusSaJ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Six Hall of Famers have died in 2020. Joe Morgan, though only 5-foot-7, stood tall during his career. As Jim Palmer said about the legendary Cincinnati Reds teams: "They weren't the Big Red Machine until they got Joe Morgan."
Hall of Fame second baseman and former Cincinnati Reds great Joe Morgan has died at 77.
