30 Days of Writing - 8. Outside

A hort one today because there are currently tons of things to do. Also: the Hobbit Fan Event happened. And Purple Haze Feedback hit me, too.

Outdoor sex was the worst.

Johnny was convinced of it after their first nights together. Not only did you have to deal with cold nights and the constant danger of strangers stumbling over you in the dark, you also got bothered by other things hindering your comfort. Small stones beneath the bedroll that always seemed to pop up in the most inconvenient moments, for example. Or a wild snake that had found its way to their fire. Or Gyro’s teddy bear which seemed to have the mysterious ability to appear whereever it was least wanted, at least by Johnny.

Still, there was hardly any other possibility. Neither of them would be able to endure weeks-long journeys through the desert without any intimacy.

They day the reached the first foothills of the massive mountain range known as the Rocky Mountains they were of high spirits; knowing that soon, they would once again have a roof over their heads. The same night Gyro made some celebratory pasta they enjoyed next to the small fire between them. It was dusk and the sun had already vanished behind the horizon.

Gyro was leaning back and watched the stars that were emerging from the velvety folds of the night’s cloak. Johnny had taken to doing their washing-up.

“Johnny...” Gyro’s voice sounded quiet, with a single note of regret hidden behind his tiredness.

“Hm?”

“The stars are almost exactly the same. It’s weird, isn’t it? This landscape reminds me of home and now even the night sky looks so much alike that you wouldn’t think I’m thousands of miles away...”

Johnny frowned. He wasn’t used to Gyro talking about his home. Of course he would’ve liked to know more about the man he had been travelling with for weeks now, but homesickness wasn’t quite the sort of thing he was interested in. It just reminded him of the fact he had no place to return to, nobody waiting for him.

“I wonder whether he’s doing ok...”

Johnny sat down the knife he had been scrubbing.

“Who are you talking about?”

Gyro jerked around, as if somebody had suddenly pulled him out of a dream.

“Ah, nothing. Sorry, Johnny, I was just lost in thoughts.”

“Oh come on, I know you were thinking of somebody in particular. Who is he?” Johnny scrambled over to his friend.

“Nobody, really. Just a little boy who was at the wrong place at the wrong moment.” Gyro’s smile looked somehow lost. Johnny bit his lip; he felt that there was something more behind this all but also knew better than to keep digging. Gyro in a bad mood was worse than not having satisfied his curiosity.

“Then don’t think about it, Gyro. Think about today, think about what’s right here in front of you.”

Johnny had hoisted himself up on his arms so that he was now leaning right over him. Gyro sighed and closed his eyes. After a brief second, he opened them again and Johnny knew that his mind was finally bound firmly in the present.

“You’re right. I’m sorry.”

Gyro slid one of his hands around Johnny’s neck and pulled him closer. And as their lips met, he forgot about his home, the young boy in prison, his duty and his family waiting for his return. All that counted this one moment was right there in his arms.
