Chapter 2: Hannah

“Make haste, cousin! The messengers say the Starks have arrived long before us!”

      Hannah turned around to see his cousin Johnroe sweaty with exhaustion. But he was never seen without flowers about him. From where they come from, and to where they go, she will never know. They have been riding for days. The scorching sun was on their heels and she could feel her tunic sticking to her chest uncomfortably. But that did not stop the big grin from forming on her face once the wide gates of King’s Landing became visible, although still many miles away.

  “Honestly,” Johnroe panted, “where do you get the energy?”

      “Do you really want to know?” she asked with a sly look on her face.

      Johnroe blanched and decided to forget he ever asked the stupid question to a person who likes to brew tea with drugs of unknown nature.

      Ignoring the victorious look on her face, he asked another question. “And why are you most concerned with arriving before the Starks?”

      Hannah raised her brow at him. “The Starks have travelled many leagues all the way from the North and have arrived before us! The King will look at us with disdain for our tardiness.”

      “Since when did you care about punctuality?” Johnroe smirked. “As far as I can recall, you never bothered with keeping to arranged times.” He paced his horse to be closer to her own.

       “And why are you most concerned with how the King looks at us?” He knew his cousin had a competitive nature. She liked races and tourneys and sometimes, gambling. But there was a reason for her actions and he knew it. She was his cousin and he knew her more than any other person in the Seven Kingdoms. Save for one. This thought in particular made him grin. Truly, his cousin was so transparent.

      “Your Lord father, my uncle, will skewer us if we make any mistakes under his name.” Hannah replied without missing a beat.

      “Oh?” Johnroe raised an eyebrow at her. “It could be that…or perhaps you are just concerned that a certain Snow will not find you in the castle upon his arrival.”

      A blush crept on Hannah’s face which was already reddened by the heat. It did not go unnoticed by her cousin.

      “Ahhhh,” Johnroe sang. “Waiting for the inevitable, searching for the invisible, for emotions hopelessly undeniable" Grinning madly, he was about to grab something from his satchel when Hannah steered her horse beside his and swat his hands away.

      “I told you, no scrolls while on the road!”

      “But—-“

      “No, cousin! Just…..No!”

      “Come on, I haven’t written anything in —“

      “Johnroe!”

      “… You’re just in a foul mood since I found out the real reason for your hurrying…” Johnroe mumbled under his breath. And louder this time, "It’s funny how everybody considers honesty a virtue, yet no one wants to hear the truth."

      Hannah pretended not to hear a word. True, she was miffed for being found out, but if Johnroe hated her tea, then she hated his scrolls. No matter how much her cherished cousin would pretend to like them, she knew him as much as he knew her after all. And like his dislike for her tea, she could not stand his scrolls, his writings, nor his random bouts of wisdom and epiphanies that seem to happen almost all the time. After living with him for almost all her life, she had failed to adapt and accept that part of him. It’s kind of sad actually.

      She rode on, Johnroe trailing behind her while the rest of their party and escorts followed. They consisted of over a hundred men. Bannermen, squires, guards, gardeners, slaves, cooks, stable boys, maids, and wagons a dozen of flowers of all species known to the Realm. They were a spectacle to behold. A moving rainbow. The thought made her smile. She liked rainbows. Two men on horseback rode before her, holding the banner of their house, a golden rose on a pale green field, which was sadly, not a rainbow.

      Although she was not the heir of Highgarden, her voice held much authority. The true power, however, rested in the hands of her poet cousin, Johnroe. He was the eldest son of Lord John II Tyrell, Lord of Highgarden and Warden of the South. He would inherit all the vast and fertile lands of the Reach, but she did not resent him for it. It was an honour she could live without, and an honour her cousin willingly accepted. She was thankful her father, Lord William, was a few years younger than Lord John. There was not much pressure in her upbringing, but there was still pressure nonetheless. She was a highborn; a Tyrell after all.

      Hannah tugged at her ponytail, tightening the leather knot and picking the stray hairs away from her sweaty neck. Her silky brown hair swayed behind, just below her shoulders as she rode on the rocky path. She had a tall and slender figure, and her golden eyes mirrored that of her cousins. She was beautiful, no doubt, and she kept the gaze of every villager and freerider that saw them pass. Despite her looks, she had a tomboyish nature and had a free spirit. She did not want to be tied down, to be a Lady of some fat rich Lord that would ask her to stay in the castle all day and pressure her to produce heirs. No, that’s annoying and not to mention boring. She loved the outdoors, the sea and the waves, and the world in all its vast glories. She did not wish to be tied down when there was still so much that the world could offer her. Except, on some occasions, (when she was but a little girl) she considered it only for the slightest of moments when it came to a certain ruby-eyed lad… No, that was a non-existent time. She never considered anything. Not a thing. Denial is good.

      She brushed the stupid thought aside as they neared the gates. She brought her hand above her eyes to repel the burning sunlight. Only then did she see the welcome party, obviously some men from the King’s Guard holding a banner of a black stag in a field of gold. The King’s sigil. She scanned the area, curious if there was a familiar face among the sea of strangers. It had only been a few months since her last visit to King’s Landing, but she knew the face she was looking for was not among the gruff looking men by the gate. He was somewhere in the castle and she was determined to find him before daybreak.

      “Why must we always be welcomed by ugly looking men?” she asked Johnroe.

       A horse’s neighing responded instead of her cousin’s voice. When she turned around to ask again, she saw him holding a scroll on one hand and a quill on the other, faced scrunched in concentration, and blob of ink spilt on his horse’s mane turning the white into black.

      “What in seven hells?”

      “I am a magician, but not in tricks of hand nor gestures, but with tricks of words and meaning.” He murmured as he looked into the distance. His distant look was then replaced by one of satisfaction as he struggled to write down on another one of his scrolls on horseback. Hannah shook her head and could only sigh in defeat.

        She looked back at her cousin; tall, golden-eyed and beautiful. One of the most beautiful men she would ever see in her lifetime. The old septas at Highgarden would say he was molded by the gods of beauty themselves. They were right. Throughout her childhood and until this day, that same beauty brought her eternal annoyance. In a few days ride she had seen more chaos in the Kingsroad than she ever has in tavern houses and jousting matches as women and men and mountain brigands scramble for Johnroe’s attention. She sighed again (how many times has she sighed? She has lost count.), wondering to herself why the Tyrell men were as they are, beautiful, prince-like, and yet sometimes naïve. Oh well, that’s better. She liked to think the women in the family had the backbone anyway.

      “Hiyah!” she roared as she sent her mare galloping all the way to the gates. She rode fast and strong and was not afraid of anything. The wind blew her hair and clothes, for a moment refreshing her once more. From a distance, she could hear her cousin screaming at her to slow down from behind. With a cheeky grin, she listened not.

      In a few minutes she arrived at the castle gate, peasants and merchants recognizing her features and making way for her. She saw an old merchant spat at a boy for being too close to her horse. “We will pay if we soil the Lady’s horse!” She heard him say. That’s not true. But let them think that.

      Johnroe and the rest of the party galloped behind to catch up. Soon he was by her side, drenched in sweat yet still gallant and prince-like on his horse. His hair was a bit dishevelled from rushing towards her, yet it only improved his looks. How weird. There was something missing though, something that hasn’t happened yet. She couldn’t place it. 

      In half a second of their arrival, she then heard the squeals of women a mile away. Yes. This was the missing thing. It would be an anomaly if there were no squealing females. Such was of course, the curse of the Tyrell men.

      “My lord. My lady. Welcome to King’s Landing. I am Ser Elwyn of the Kingsguard, tasked by his majesty the Prince Khenrich to ——“

      “Save us the formalities Ser. We wish to be taken to the castle immediately. I wish to see my men settled in, and my horses in the stables. It has been a long ride.” Johnroe said with authority. Hannah always liked it when he acted with pride. It made her proud of her house, but she knew her dear cousin was only eager to find a nice place to write on his scrolls.

      Ser Elwyn looked at him, awestruck and with a redness on his cheeks. After his minute long daze, he cleared his throat and bellowed orders to his men.

      After a week’s ride, the Tyrells have finally arrived at the Red Keep. The road was indeed thick with travellers; not excluding the Lords and Ladies from all over the realm who were ready to attend the King’s grand wedding. Per usual, the Tyrells were tasked to supply the flowers for the occasion. They were more than happy to oblige. Lord John  and William Tyrell have sent their children in their stead, since they were now too weak to travel.

      Hannah and Johnroe made sure their men had settled and the flowers delivered before they retired to their own chambers to freshen up.

      Hannah had to reluctantly change from her leather riding boots and pants to a green silk gown she had hated the moment it was presented to her. Despite that, she still wore them, feeling like she was being encased in an annoying costume. She took off her pony tail and started to comb her hair down. It was actually easy if she tried. She preferred not to though.

      Hannah looked at her reflection from a full length mirror conveniently placed in her chambers. A prim and proper Lady stared back. “At least it was kind of poofy and fun to twirl around in.”, she thought.

      She gave the reflection a curtsy, and shook her head. “Bah. No, I’m not going to go about looking like this.”

      She looked at her wardrobe; her clothes recently unpacked by the servants, and took a new clean pair of boots instead of cotton shoes, and a golden belt to fasten a red cloth around her waist. She took a necklace from one of her boxes by the dresser. It was a beautiful ornament of gold chains with a golden rose at the center, her House sigil. If she was to look like a Lady then she will have to look like a Lady with ferocity. Anyone who knew her would recognize her just by her fashion statement. Hannah tried and failed to temper her grin. She was not made for court or poetry or needlework. She was made for riding, sailing across storm-infested seas and gambling.

      She stopped by the doorway and turned to look at her maids who were busy unpacking her other things.  She was always so confident, but this time, she was a little bit hesitant.

      “Do I look…presentable?” She asked them whilst combing her hair nervously.

      The maids were not accustomed to that question coming out from their lady’s mouth. But still they nodded, although a tad little too forcefully, and gave her words of compliment.

      “Beautiful as always, m’lady!”

      “Ahh, well,” she cleared her throat, willing a blush down. “It’s almost time for tea. Have everything ready at the pavilion and make it a table for two.”

      “Very good, m’lady.”

      With that, she heaved a deep sigh and set out to find the person she has been waiting to see for eight long years.

      “I’m coming for you, Snow.”
