I'm compiling Zorro short stories and literally everything about the cover for this story has me laughing:

Like first the title makes it sound like Zorro's opening a restaurant, then the blurb mentions a "z" in tortilla, which??? clearly isn't spelled with a z (tortillaz?), and there's also the description of the image, which clearly shows Zorro being driven back

I almost don't want to read it because whatever happens in the story can't possibly be as good as what I'm picturing in my mind

Pulptober 2025 Day Fifteen: Damsel in Distress

Golden Fleece Historical Adventure was a short-lived pulp magazine that featured, you guessed it, historical adventure stories. This is the cover of the June 1939 issue, and illustrates the story "Guardian Devil" by Johnston McCulley, who you may remember as the author of the Zorro stories.

It's set in Old Santa Fe, and the title character is Yanqui trader Dan O'Dowd, who becomes involved when he sees a pretty young woman being assaulted by a gang. He's hired by a local hidalgo to be her "guardian devil" but she acts weirdly towards Dan, vowing her love at various points, but at others acting as if they've never met before. There turns out to be a semi-plausible explanation, and by the end of the story she's out of distress.
