Skewed workload is one of the major performance issues which the Optimizer tries to avoid whenever possible.

The following example shows how the data relocation strategy is adjusted to the skew factor of the tables participating in a merge join, given the Optimizer has can rely on collected statistics. Sample statistics would probably mislead the Optimizer, causing a not optimal join plan.
