July 27th – family or apotheosis [x]
Officially, civilians were not permitted to approach dragons in the event of an attack. Most people were all too happy to obey this decree from the Whiterun Guard and after an initial few months of panic, it had now become second nature, upon hearing that earth-ripping shriek, to duck into cover and wait for either a triumphant horn from the battlefield, or the flapping of wings followed by a long silence. There were always those who wanted a good stare, however, or to tell their grandchildren, should they survive to have any, that they had fought off the dragon menace single-handedly.
Trond, who refused to wield a bow after The Incident and didn't fancy standing in a field underneath a dragon while frantically waggling a sword in the air, often ended up tasked with keeping this would-be audience at bay. He huffed behind his helmet at the latest person to approach and readied his shield, until he recognised the dogs racing at the figure's heels.
'Haaki, get back!'
'I'm going to help.'
'Get back, troll brains!'
The Road Goes On [Drabble - a few years in the future]
No matter where the hunter roams,
Under mountain, over hill...
The scent of red mountain flowers, grown in the spring and only now beginning to die off, snagged on the heather, as the footsteps trudging through it disturbed flocks of seeds and dust.
'Uncle Haaki, can you sing one of your songs? Please?’
'Only if Uncle Hjoll joins in.'
A little older, a little greyer, but otherwise much the same, and in Haaki's case looking fuller and healthier than he had done for years, the Boar-Chaser clan forged a path through the meadow grass. They were returning from Falkreath cemetery, having paid their respects to the long gone Boar-Chaser siblings. After saying goodbye to Frithjofr at the crossroads, where he had taken the path towards Solitude, they left the hold via Hjolrin's hunting lodge outside Riverwood, picking up Arlain en route, and now they were heading in the general direction of Whiterun, although their path so far had crossed most of the Plains with no sense of urgency. Whenever Amelie wanted to chase a rabbit, or Branthar spotted a patch of herbs in the shade, or Haaki and Sibjorn's children instigated a game of hide-and-seek, the rest followed without question. Whenever someone strayed too far towards a barrow or giant’s camp, the pack of dogs herded them back into the fold.
Screams and laughter from the children aside, it was peaceful, for a gathering of the Boar-Chasers. The brothers had yet to start up one of their arguments. The cousins were playing well together. Arlain, despite her solemn expression and having only exchanged the iciest of greetings with Haaki when they met at the lodge, had pinned a note reading Drama-Flouncer onto his back and, when Thaena caught her, pressed a finger to her lips, warning the children – and Trond – to keep quiet. Her victim had yet to notice.
'The clover in the grass and the sun in the air-- come on, Trond, even you know the words to this one.'
'Aye, I know the words. The words aren't the problem. It's the tune. You'll laugh at me, I know you.'
'I would never do such a thing! Come on. The clover on the plains and the sun in the air...'
'...and my own pretty lass with the flowers in her hair... You’re laughing.'
‘I’m not, promise. On the road which wanders under mountain, over hill--'
'--and always has and always will,' finished Hjolrin.
The youngest Boar-Chaser, Vinnela, Haaki and Sibby's daughter, was barely toddling, and insisted upon hanging off her mother's hand with each shaky step. It didn't take long for Sibby to grab Haaki's hand as well, and when Haaki caught Einan shortly before he ran face first into a rock, the chain began to grow quickly. Amelie slowed until she was at Einan's pace and reached out for Hjotra, who drew in all her own siblings with help from Arlain and Hjolrin. Trond and Joldi secured the last few stragglers until the clan formed a long line, singing together as they wandered through the clover in the grass and the sun in the air.
...the road to Whiterun leads to home
and always has
and always will.
TROND
Family Headcanon #27 - Brandrel’s Bees
Before his death, Brandrel was introducing the art of bee-keeping to the Boar-Chaser farm with the intention of producing honey for Honningbrew Meadery, or possibly starting up a meadery of his own. His parents, in keeping with the family’s long association with Zenithar, were pleased with his business sense and welcomed the addition. Minnel used to joke that he only wanted to impress barmaid Rodda Cold-Tree, and Hjolrin that it was Brandrel’s way of avoiding farm work. Trond delighted in telling Haaki about how if he disturbed the hives, killer bees would chase him all over the mountains.
Brandrel’s enthusiasm dimmed after the death of Minnel and Pa. When he was killed himself, the hives were abandoned and none of the remaining Boar-Chasers have felt motivated to restore them, although Joldi has hinted that she would enjoy using their own honey in her baking.
Speaking of partner's on Heart's Day: what would the deceased Boar-Chasers (Ma, Pa, Brandel, Minnel) think of each brother's respective romantic partners?
Arlain [dragonbornguard]
Arlain they would approve of thoroughly, although they would be somewhat shocked that she chose Hjolrin of all people. As far as Ma would be concerned (possibly to Arlain’s displeasure?), the Dragonborn is even better than a Companion, and on the more personal side of things Pa would be pleased to see someone who could bring Hjolrin out of himself. The same goes for Minnel and Brandrel. Plus, as every Boar-Chaser child considered themselves arbiters of any potential partners of their siblings, she is the sort of person who would have passed Minnel and Brandrel’s judgement – tough enough to take their teasing in her stride and fun to be around.
As for her recent change in demeanour, it would worry the family. When they think of somebody as their own, they really mean it; Arlain’s frequent disappearances, and her growing quietness when she does return, would probably have Minnel sitting her down and demanding she talk about what’s going on, while Brandrel would insist on her joining the family for a meal to try and cheer her up.

Joldi
Although they weren’t around for her marriage to Trond, the deceased Boar-Chasers did meet Joldi a few times. Ma would have preferred her to be a bit more adventurous, to have aspirations higher than selling bread in Whiterun, but she had to admit that she was good at her work and that a baker was an ideal match for Trond. Pa quietly approved of her – a guard is enough excitement for one family.
Minnel and Brandrel knew her a little better. She was too mild-mannered to be properly teased, neither flaring up nor giving back as good as she got, but who’s going to say no to free sweet rolls? Like Ma, they thought her profession was a good match for Trond.
(Trond would like to know what that is supposed to mean, exactly.)

Sibjorn [sibjorn]
In the context of Haaki’s late escapades, the Boar-Chasers would probably just breathe a huge sigh of relief that Haaki wasn’t off chasing a Dunmer pirate or something.
With that pitfall successfully avoided, Ma would approve of Sibby, particularly when Haaki mentions the adventures they’ve had, whereas Pa would wonder whether Haaki needs someone a little more grounding in his life. Still, if Haaki says he has Sibby to thank for escaping his personal demons, then far be it from Pa to complain (especially when Ma is glaring at him).
Brandrel would love Sibby (actually he’d probably flirt with her and find it hilarious how disgruntled that made Haaki). Minnel would have more reservations – she was unashamedly protective of her baby brother – and might share a bit of playful, lighthearted rivalry with Sibby, but like Pa, at the end of the day she wouldn’t object to a nice young lady with whom Haaki is so clearly besotted.
The Happiest Day
'Love you.'
'Love you.'
A quick kiss exchanged on the doorstep, a squeeze of the hand, and Joldi was gone.
Trond Headcanon #22 - Joldi Meets The Family
Early on in their relationship, Trond did his best to impress Joldi with his usual parade of boasting and bragging. Aware that she probably wouldn’t be convinced by stories about himself -- and of course because he didn’t want to outright lie in what he hoped would be a long-term relationship -- he focused a lot on his family instead, exaggerating their achievements into the realms of the unbelievable.
This came back to bite him when he took her home for the first time. Trond, unashamed, opted not to correct any of Joldi’s preconceptions about his siblings, and was quite looking forward to seeing how they handled her expectations.
Unfortunately for Trond, Joldi was having a little fun of her own. She had seen Minnel around Whiterun before getting together with Trond, and by the time she came home to meet the family officially the two were already good friends. Minnel filled her in on everything she needed to know, and kept Brandrel up to date on Trond’s increasingly improbable stories, so that by the time Trond “introduced” Joldi to them they were ready to put on a suitable performance.
Joldi’s giggling gave the game away in the end, right around the point Minnel enthusiastically confirmed that she had indeed tamed an entire pack of wolves using only a carrot and her bare hands. Although initially put out, Trond took it in stride, and ultimately it did a lot to break the ice (even if it did take several minutes to explain the joke to Frithjofr and a very young Haaki).
