Joli well gone, Lubuntu to see you...
Well the Linux rabbit hole continues, after a little more research into Joli OS it turns out support has discontinued (they want to focus on the web based OS: JoliCloud), so I’m giving Lubuntu a go…
Not as easy as Joli OS or Windows, the first problem I ran into was just installing system apps, because I’ve never used them I was none the wiser that there was a problem and there was no indication. But that’s more of an issue with being lead by the nose when it comes to computers, to appeal to the masses things have to be simplified (sometimes even stupefied) so anyone can use them, its one of the reasons we’re moving towards touch.
As it turns out it was because I hadn’t updated…
So my impressions so far: my third OS in three days – not for the beginner, but that’s a vague statement at the best of times, in this case it means you’ll be spending a lot of time figuring stuff out, rather than stuff being done automatically or being told with popups, this sounds like it more of an effort but in reality I feel I have a more vested interest in how the Netbook is running. More importantly I have more control: for me the biggest reason for switching was the Netbook was getting slower and unable to play online media, which was odd considering the hardware hasn’t changed. So it’s a lot faster and I mean noticeably faster than Windows, added to that I can watch video (web based), so far so good.
