Well for one thing I feel like d&d dumb down Jon in the show too much. Look how they made him look in botb. He only "won" cause of Sansa. I doubt it goes like that in the book. I think d&d even said something not directly but implied it that they wanted to make jon fail a little. His entire arc is about him failing. Could they have let him won this one? Even this season he was dumbed down. I'm a Jon Snow stan done with d&d's bs.
To be fair, I don’t think that D&D treat Jon as bad as they treat other important characters. While they completely butchered other characters or tend to ignore them, they at least give Jon some moments of glory every season and they also give him the screen time he deserves (he’s still the character with the most screen time).
However, as a Jon stan (and more importantly as a book!Jon stan as well) I’m also bothered that they have tone down many important elements of his. It seems that their characterization of Jon can be summarized as: great fighter, more honorable than the rest. While in reality, Jon is so much more than this. Why can’t theyshow us more of his book sassiness? Why can’t theyshow us his political side? (instead every show fan would call Jon”the man who sucks at politics” and I wouldn’t blame them because that’s how the show portrays him). Why can’t they even show us his strategic skills? (in the show the plan he came up to face Ramsay was a disastrous one and even his little sister who had zero experience with war strategy pointed that out to him) Finally, why can’t they show us his less honorable traits, like his ability to lie when the times call it, or his ability to make tough decisions that would sacrifice an individual’s happiness if that meant to secure the welfare of the world ( remember the situation with Gilly’s baby from the books?).
Since you specifically mentioned the battle of bastards let me say that I have a very unpopular opinion that comes to a complete disagreement with D&D’s views. I’ll leave it to this, because if I write down all of my thoughts on the subject this will no longer be a Jon centered reply/analysis.
(Btw, please talk to me about book!Jon or any subject involving him because he’s my favourite character and there aren’t enough discussions about him).
