I’m on a bit of an Anthology Recordings jag. This often happens when I “discover” a label. Frickin’ Christopher Columbus.
“Litmus” is “the soundtrack to Andrew Kidman's groundbreaking 1996 surf film.” Kidman is clearly an accomplished filmmaker and musician. His band The Val Dusty Experiment is responsible for most of the music here. There are guests - Rosie Sutherland, Jon Frank and Kevin Baker. And there is a groovy song by Yothu Yindi.
Anthology Recordings is a Brooklyn based label (part of the Mexican Summer label...check out their summer sale)
Even surf legend Kelly Slater quoted that Stephanie Gilmore "Is an original badass" and I think he's right! Filmed by prolific cinematographer Jon Frank, with music performed by Italian classical pianist Alberto Bof, THE TEMPEST features 6x World Surfing Champion Stephanie Gilmore produced by Monster Children. The Tempest is here.
This visual entrée to Stephanie Gilmore's upcoming guest editor issue was directed by one of the most prolific in the surf film and photography game, Mr Jon Frank. We headed to the far reaches of the Indonesian archipelago in search of the perfect right to compliment Steph's surfing, and well, we found it. The accompanying track is performed by classically trained Italian pianist and composer Alberto Bof, a feature of an early 1900’s piece by Ravel, "Jeux d'eau,” with sound design by Venice based MKRS studio.
