The Meg (dir. Jon Turtletaub 2018)
The best thing about The Meg was the really big shark, and that was always going to be the case, just as it was the best thing about Jaws - even after 33 years of cinematic evolution, what the people want is (still) a really big shark.
I’ve not seen many Jason Statham movies, despite his oeuvre containing a significant number of angry-man-gun-shooting movies (one of my favourite genres) and his appearances in two of my most favourite ridiculous movies, Spy and Fast and Furious 8. Partnered with adorably named director Jon Turtletaub, Statham brings us a movie that is, if nothing else, maximum shark. He provides the angry harpoon-shooting, while his supporting cast are variously solid comic relief (Masi Oka, Olafur Darri Olafssun), cure-all techie girl with Haircut (Ruby Rose) and compelling emotional backbone (Winston Chao and Li Bingbing). Rainn Wilson gives a stand-out performance as the cowardly US businessman we all love to hate, while Page Kennedy does a fab job with some truly awful dialogue. And who could forget Jessica McNamee as “ex-wife injured to raise the stakes”, despite being a full 19 years younger than Statham. McNamee’s casting grated on me a little, as we were expected to believe in the backstory for the character, even though she was far too young to have 10 years experience driving deep sea submarines.
The movie is awash with stereotypes, but it’s a shark movie - if you want depth of character you’re not going to find it at the bottom of the Mariana Trench, that’s where you go for actual depth. That said, movies like Skyscraper have proved that it is possible for big summer blockbusters to tell their stories without relying wholly on tired cliches - so some of the weaker characters, like Ruby Rose’s eye-rollingly omnicompetent alt.sidekick Jaxx, are a little dull.
But I want to make it clear that despite some of the less innovative elements, I had an excellent time. There’s a tonne of creepy underwater tension, an enormous shark, a preposterously muscled man defeating a giant creature with his fists and his caustic wit, and did I mention the enormous shark? There’s also a love story that, to be honest, I could have done without - but there’s a giant shark to make up for that. What The Meg has taught me about life is, when it gets boring, add a giant shark, and things will get better!
THE MEG New Movie Review
THE MEG New Movie Review
There’s a megalodon-sized reason The MEG is a better movie than Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom: It’s a Jason Statham versus a giant shark B-movie that knows exactly what it is, has a cheeky sense of humor about itself, and is free of franchise-building expectations (or any high minded expectations). Fallen Kingdom is a joyless, here-we-go-again sequel to a reboot, needed to bridge a trilogy…
