From Facebook:
"Yutate Kagura. A sacred ritual where boiling water from a cauldron is scattered using bamboo leaves, warding off evil spirits and praying for good health and the fulfillment of wishes. Following the maiden's dance, a maiden wearing a sash vigorously scatters water from the large cauldron. It is said that receiving these droplets brings divine favor. After the ritual fukuzasa (blessed bamboo branches) are bestowed. January 20, 2026"
Jōnangū 城南宮
I visited Jōnangū with a friend to see their famous Camellia flowers. This shrine enshrines Empress Jingū, Kuni no Tokotachi no Kami, and Yachihokonokami (another name for Ōkuninushi no Kami). You can read more about the shrine here.
The plaque at the shrine says:
"When Japan's capital was relocated to Kyoto in 794, this shrine was founded to guard the country. In 1086, Retired Emperor Shirakawa built the Jonan Imperial Villa (Toba Imperial Villa), which placed even more importance on the Jonan-gu shrine and resulted in numerous religious ceremonies being performed here. The imperial household showed great devotion to the shrine.
Later, it became a historical landmark of the Meiji Restoration when the shrine was used by the government army as a base in 1868.
Even today there is still a deep belief in the gods of direction, construction and safe travel enshrined here. The shrine gardens, referred to as "The Tale of Genji Flower Gardens," are famous for the abundance of flowers that bloom throughout all four seasons, and the elegant "Kyokusui-no-Utage" ceremony is performed here every year."
They were also doing a special blessing when I was there, a flower protection blessing, which I did.
Video of the blessing
Their Goshuin was also stunning
