World's End | Hate to turn up out of the blue uninvited
It was a dark and stormy night. Gideon realized that every single horror story that his brother had ever told him when they were growing up, and his brother had told him many, many horror stories, started with these dark and ominous words. They were the Sheppard Family Bedtime Story equivalent of "once upon a time," really. But in this case, it was very, very true. When he'd left the training facility, it had been dark already. Logically, he should've waited until morning and then caught a ride out to his brother's base when the supply truck made its scheduled run.
But the stress of his training, coupled with his complete inability to deal with the romantic situation he'd somehow gotten caught up in, was a little too much for him. He'd packed his things and taken off on foot. It wasn't a situation where it had seemed like a good idea at the time. In fact, it had seemed like the worse kind of idea from the jump. Running off in the middle of the night with a thunderstorm rumbling in the distance was the kind of thing his brother would've done.
And yet there Gideon was, wandering around in the dark as the rain hammered down on him. It was almost like someone was following him around with a bucket, just constantly dumping icy water on his head. He'd actually managed to hitch a ride most of the way to the base, but he'd had to hoof it the last mile. He couldn't blame the driver. Most bases were in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by nothing but dirt and monsters. Now that he was thinking about it, he was starting to get jumpy at the possibility of something leaping out at him in the dark. But there wasn't really much he could do about it apart from keep moving.
Even though it took him all of twenty minutes to walk the last stretch of land to the hunter's base, with the cold and damp and the fact that he was guessing as to where he was going, it felt like hours. But finally, mercifully, he found himself standing outside of the large, metal doors. Immediately, he looked up, searching for the security camera.
"Hello?" he called out, waving at the monitoring device with one hand and pounding on the door with the other. "C-can someone p-p-please lemme in? It's freezing out h-here." He knew that someone would be in the monitor room, watching the screens, in theory. Whether that person was actually attentive or not was entirely up to chance. With his luck, Gideon thought, his big brother was on duty and was probably otherwise occupied with trying to count how many marshmallows he could fit in his mouth, and in that case Gideon might be standing out in the rain for a while.
He shivered and knocked again, still waving at the camera.
