Lisa Cameron / Jonathan Horne / Ingebrigt Håker Flaten / Joshua Thomson — Place Is The Space (Personal Archives)
Place Is the Space by Cameron/Horne/Flaten/Thomson
Location matters for this quartet. It is based in Austin TX, which is not in itself that helpful a signifier. Austin is, after all, an industry town. Do you mean Austin City Limits? Elderly outlaw Austin? The courting-big-content Austin that orbits around SxSW? You could check a fair number of options off the list before you get to the improvisationally-oriented musicians with interestingly diverse back stories Austin, which is the sub-community responsible for this cassette album.
The fact that this is an Austin band with a bass player named Ingebrigt Håker Flaten means that location matters a great deal, especially given the events of recent years. Flaten, also of The Thing, School Days, Atomic, Scorch Trio, Rempis Percussion Quartet and many, many other similarly steaming ensembles, is Norwegian, but Austin was his primary base between 2009 and 2020. He’s the rainmaking force growing the Sonic Transmissions Festival, an energizing force for Austin which has helped grow the kind of music under consideration in this review. But when COVID-19 shut things down, he, like numerous other people around the world, put his stuff in storage and road out the lockdown in the land identified on his birth certificate. That necessitated scheduling that this totally improvised encounter, which connects a collection of long-standing dyads, around a brief taking-care-of-business trip back to Texas at the beginning of 2021.
Evil Little Things official trailer released Evil Little Things is a horror anthology where a young boy finds a mystical toymaker with stories to tell.

Wednesday, April 27
9pm-12am
Avant-garde outsider music collage artist Ralph White performs and sits in to improvise with talented experimental musician friends, Venison Whirled, Jonathan Horne, and T Putnam Hill for a noteworthy mid-week night of music. Four remarkable Austin musicians, one remarkable improvised set.
As a self-taught master of many instruments, from American and world folk traditions, Ralph White infuses an experimental approach to original songs, and the arrangement of covers. Featured in the Austin Chronicle Music Anthology, White is best known in Texas music history as the fiery fiddler from the Bad Livers, but he has been blazing another trail, touring across the U.S. and Europe as an unusually entertaining interpreter of traditional folk songs who also enjoys the art of experimental and improvisational music.
Venison Whirled is most familiar and comfortable creating another world of sound that requires an active listening passport to traverse beyond familiar comfort zones. Ambient noises can be heard from common to unusual objects during a Venison Whirled trip, guided by the musician also known as Lisa Cameron (ST 37, The Devil Bat).
Jonathan Horne is a colorful and versatile Austin music character. Horne practices the art of music improvisation as a multi-instrumentalist, but he’s best known for eclectically stellar jazz/rock fusion guitar performances, as a soloist and with Plutonium Farmers, which will soon release a debut album engineered by Steve Albini.
T Putnam Hill recently relocated from San Diego, where he started composing electronic/acousmatic/dub music, and he's still producing some of the most unique and entertaining collaborations with traditional folk stylists, and experimental noise and theatrical performers in Austin.
When Ralph White sits in with friends, expect the unexpected – and expect to be entertained by the finest musical improvisers.
Ralph White & Friends Sit In is a free event at Cheer Up Charlie’s on Wednesday, April 27th, presented by Anti-Gravity. Doors open at 8:00, and music starts at 9:00.
