A very Aldo performance here. Martinez likes to fight in open space and Aldo is arguably one of the best to ever fight in open space. Even at 37, Aldo picked off his shots really well. Peppered in a bunch of the open guard right hands to the body with leg kicks to the lead lead. Hurt Martinez a number of times over the last two rounds, particularly with that kick. And when he rocked him with like 80 seconds left, Aldo took him down to secure the win.

Jose Aldo, who announced his retirement from mixed martial arts in 2022, will return to action at UFC 301 in Rio de Janeiro against Jonathan

Completely forgot to post the article about the news.

Desperate to make UFC 301 a ticket seller, they managed to pay Aldo to come out of retirement. Not like Aldo hasn’t been fighting. He spent 2023 doing various boxing matches, including with Jeremy Stephens. Was kind of hoping this one stuck but figured it wouldn’t.

He’ll get ​Jonathan Martinez for his return.

Jonathan Martinez stops Adrian Yanez with leg kicks in the 2nd!

Death by leg kicks. Yanez had no answer for Martinez's kicking game. He ate up the inside of Yanez's leg with kicks. One after another after another after another. Had Yanez doing 360s trying to catch his balance. There has always been something to Yanez's boxing that I did not like, even as he was racking up HL reel KOs. Martinez on the other hand has been a great kicker since he showed up. And, as simple as it sounds, happy he kept going back to what worked. You'd be surprised how often fighters get away from the thing that makes them successful.

Jonathan Martinez knocks out Frankie Saenz in the 3rd round!

Saenz tries to come forward behind a quadruple jab and ends up walking right into a knee from Martinez and it’s all over. Complete dominance from Martinez who was the faster and more powerful striker.

I feel for Saenz. Dude’s game would have been trendsetting back in 2009 (and he’d be in his prime at 28 year old), but there’s a reason we will never have a 40 year old bantamweight champion. Martinez just saw everything coming.
