I've seen a lot of mixed feelings about Moon becoming a dad/caretaker.
I understand Moon completely. He understands what he feels now. The last time he had emotions around a child was with Jonathan, Patrick, and Samantha. He killed those kids and lived with the grief. His lack of emotions made it better, but now that he has it back he yearns to make the feeling go away. Molten's death also probably made him realize it as well.
He wants to protect TJ unlike what he could do for the kids he killed and not being there to save Molten. That's why he so quickly questioned if he was a dad and said he adopted TJ. To fill a gap he created.
