Sorry Dr. W, but Quentin Tarantino is perhaps the most iconic director to ever kickstart a career at Sundance. His hyper-violent and verbose writing style cause his movies to lose a lot of mainstream appeal. This coupled with his unapologetic brash attitude and unforeseen overnight success with reservoir dogs make him the quintessential Sundance icon, or perhaps the QUENTINsential icon. Haha

Traits of Sundance Films

As I said in my VR post, Sundance is about feelings. Competence matters very little to the festival organizers and audience. The films that make it to Sundance must fulfill at least one of three requirements: The audience of the film must feel: Shocked (Kuso), Privileged (Dayveon), or Lucky (Any movie with stars who will be in the room during the premiere). This isn't truly an exclusive list, as there are some notable counter-examples in the World Cinema category (Sueno En Otro Idioma), but most of the Sundance films fit one of those three traits, with a lot of variation in quality in basic film ingredients like framing, cutting on action, etc.
