Wrath of the Titans just isn't needed right now. Clash of the Titans made quite a lot of money two years ago but is it that memorable? The Greek mythology, action scenes, and Kraken were all pretty cool but everything else? Not so much. I did give it 3 out of 4 stars and went along with the messiness of the whole thing but I pretty much gave it a good review because Gemma Arterton, who plays Io, IS VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY SEXY. Well, since Hollywood loves making as much money as possible with sequels, remakes, and reboots, now there's WRATH of the Titans. Are the special effects as cool as they were in the first movie? Of course. But is this movie unforgettable? No. Absolutely not.
For starters there's the 3D. Clash of the Titans, which came out right after the 3D craze of Avatar, got ripped apart by critics because it was filmed in 2D and then converted in a matter of a month. THAT'S HORRIBLE. I never saw the movie when it came out but I've had my share of converted 3D movies like Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger and let me tell you, IT'S A RIPOFF. When I saw that Wrath of the Titans was in 3D I thought "Great! They must have filmed it in 3D because they've learned their lesson of how awful Clash of the Titans was converted." Well sadly I was wrong, because the movie was converted into 3D like its predecessor. I get it. They KNEW from the start that they were gonna convert it so they filmed scenes that will look three-dimensional with regular cameras. It's a wise choice but it's stupid because conversion doesn't improve 3D at all! It just doesn't! Why don't directors understand this!? The conversion in Wrath of the Titans makes the 3D look dim, lousy, dark, and, um, not 3D at all. There were about 2 3D shots in the entire 99 minutes of the movie where I went "Oh. That's actually kinda cool!"
Sam Worthington still hasn't stunned me in a performance. I hate to say that he's not much of an actor but so far he's made that pretty clear. The dialogue's kinda clunky in the movie but that didn't bother me that much because come on, it's already a ridiculous film. Many critics are calling the plot incomprehensible but I disagree. There are a few unanswered plot points (like why does so-and-so suddenly go against Hades even though he was on his side from the start?) but it's pretty understandable overall. The problem is that the story is just kinda been-there-done-that. The Titans are landing on Earth and are gonna cause mayhem. Perseus must stop them. He needs a certain weapon to defeat this giant fire monster (seriously how come in all these Greek mythological action movies the hero needs a certain weapon to defeat the villain? It's so old!). There's also hardly any depth to any of the characters. I can usually get away with weak characterization in action movies but here I can't ignore it. Each of the monsters simply appears and then gets killed. That's it. They're just all angry and vicious. Nothing else.
The movie has more humor than its predecessor and there's a nicer dynamic between Zeus (Liam Neeson) and Hades (Ralph Fiennes) which I liked. And like I said before, the action and special effects are fun to watch. Unfortunately the bad 3D, weak characters, and boring storyline make the movie pretty unnecessary.
