I just finished Strangers from Hell last night and I think this is going to be my entire personality now alongside Hannibal and Squid game.

there is something deeply, fundamentally wrong with moonjo and he knows it, and yet he doesn’t hide it.

i think he gave up trying to hide it a long long time ago because people will see through you no matter how hard you try. no matter what you do, if you’re not like other people, you will be hated by most and you will be pushed out, so why bother?

he doesn’t try to be “normal” or fit in and the people he hates the most are those who try too hard to conform and aren’t their true selves. yes, he is jealous of the rapper and the apparent connection he has with jongwoo, but he also has a disdain for him because he tries too hard to be liked. this is part of moonjos goal; not only to make jongwoo see that they’re not like others, but that he doesn’t have to hide the way others do. he wants to show him how pathetic those that try to hide are. how desperate they are. how beneath him they are.

i believe this is also one of the reasons why moonjo kills gi-hyeok (room 302); gi-hyeok goes from trying to fit in with the outside world to trying to fit in with the residence people. he tries to be moonjo, even though that’s not who he really is. he even somewhat mimics moonjos method of strangulation. he copies his clothes, his facial expressions, even the way moonjo waits in the alley by the rainbow staircase like he does when he talks to jongwoo and the rapper. but gi-hyeok does something moonjo would never do, something pedestrian and vulgar; he spits on jongwoo. his true self leaks out, no matter how hard he tries to stifle it

these people try too hard out of fear of being rejected or ostracized, regardless of the group they’re trying to fit into. moonjo is drawn to jongwoo because he conforms not necessarily because he is afraid of what people might think, but instead out of fear of what he is capable of and what he will do if given the chance, if pushed far enough.

moonjo longs to be understood and only wants to be surrounded by those who could understand him, but even then he really doesn’t try to hide who he is. yes, he is vague about his profession at first with jongwoo, but he genuinely likes him. it’s not a front with him. it’s easy for him to smile around jongwoo because they have things in common, which is rare for moonjo. there are many cases of unspoken communication and understanding between the two, something that neither of them have with other people. moonjo not only respects him and wants him to be himself, but he can see that jongwoo, like himself, does not desire to fit in.
