Tagged by the wonderful axelmacabre, yayayaya I get to talk about books. :3 Sorry if my descriptions are boring or anything, but they're all really really fantastic books, go read them.
Rules: In a text post, list ten books that have stayed with you in some way. Don’t take but a few minutes, and don’t think too hard — they don’t have to be the “right” or “great” works, just the ones that have touched you. Tag [ten] friends, including me, so I’ll see your list.
Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami
This is probably my favourite book, by one of my favourite authors. It’s the first book I read by him, and probably his most famous. I couldn’t put it down when I first read it, I sat in my room one weekend and read it cover to cover… It’s fantastic. Poetic, moving… Beautiful. I’m not going to give up anything about the plot, just go and read it. The kind of book that’ll stay with you forever.
His Dark Materials (trilogy) by Philip Pullman
This was one of the first proper series’ I read as a kid, and loved it from the start… Amazing vivid worlds and characters, love, a knife that can tear holes in reality and a plot to kill god… What more could you want.
The Discworld series by Terry Pratchett
Terry Pratchett’s another of my favourite authors. Hilarious, satirical, some of the best fantasy I’ve ever read with so many different stories and characters that you’ll come to love deeply.
Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman
I’ve gotten into Neil Gaiman recently, and he now completes my holy trinity of favourite authors. Neverwhere is one of the best novels he’s ever written, surreal and gritty and beautiful…
The Sandman series (and Death: The Deluxe edition) by Neil Gaiman
The series that got me into Neil Gaiman. It’s a comic, one the completely changed the comic industry… The tales of the Endless; Dream, Death, Desire, Destiny, Delirium, Despair and Destruction. And their interactions with the human world. Centered on Dream and his kingdom of Dreaming, with more wonderful surrealism and fantasy combined with sometimes incredibly dark stories. Nowhere else would you laugh, cry and get lessons on STD’s from Death herself.
Intensely political and terrifying, a cult book that will change the way you see the world.
The Catcher in the Rye by J.D Salinger
Another book and character that’ll stay with me forever. Oh Holden Caulfield… The archetypical depressed and disillusioned teenager.
The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath
Only read this this week, and whoa… Incredibly powerful book. Really depressing, but fantastic all the same… Bitter and dark. Will suck you in completely. A book that needs to be read.
Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami
Another by Murakami, one of his best. A man that talks to cats, a boy with an Oedipus complex, a young transgender librarian and Colonel Sanders of Kentucky Fried Chicken. Fantastic.
Lost at Sea by Bryan Lee o’Malley
Another comic from the creator of Scott Pilgrim, about 18 year old Rayleigh who’s had her soul stolen by cats. Beautiful, funny, moving… Read it. :3
