A thousand years later. This is based around how they would end up from my fic, which has deviated from canon but the same basic idea is gonna go down.
1. What habits does each have that the other hates?
Katniss uses every single part of everything she owns. She abhors waste in any form and she refuses to throw anything out. If Johanna tries to toss something because it broke or outlasted its usefulness Katniss will snatch it out of the trash.
“It might come in handy someday.”
There are drawers full of random bits and bobs all around their house and Johanna has taken to casually throwing a few things out when Katniss is out of the house.
~
Johanna sharpens her axes and knives in the living room. She is a messy person by nature, but she does usually have the forethought to put a towel or sheet on the ground first to catch the shavings. But the noise, that grinding sharp noise puts Katniss’s teeth on edge from the beginning. Even when she leaves the room the sound follows, ringing in her ears relentlessly.
2. What arbitrary rules do they enforce on each other? (direction the toilet paper, color of hand soap, how to set the table, etc.)
Johanna collects the firewood. Katniss is not allowed to. Katniss is also not allowed to touch Johanna’s axes. Ever.
~
They never eat at the kitchen table together. It brings up bad memories for Katniss. The only time her family would sit at the table was during the Hunger Games, so now she just avoids it entirely. Now if/when they eat together it’s on the couch or on their back porch, sitting side by side.
3. What slight from years ago do they bring up against each other in fights when it starts getting ugly?
They fight all the god damned time, honestly. It’s how they flirt. Pretty much nothing is off limits except mentioning Prim. Johanna never crosses that line, because even though she’s an ass, she’s not “100% a dick” as Peter Quill might say.
“Alright, alright, keep your damn clothes on.”
“Seriously? That was one time!”
~
“Do you even have a brain? I’m serious. Are you sure you’re not just some empty headed puppet? You’re easy enough to control.”
4. In what ways do they let themselves go?
Johanna mellows out super hard. She would be embarrassed by herself, honestly. It’s not “letting herself go” in the traditional sense, but her confrontational attitude was part of what Katniss originally found attractive (even if she never admitted it)
~
After a few years, they stop having a lot of sex. At first Katniss felt like it was something she had to do, like it was just a thing you did in a relationship. But once she realized that it wasn’t really necessary and that Johanna wasn’t going to leave her for saying no when she didn’t feel like it, she started being more honest about her desires. Most of those desires included not having sex. Johanna’s pretty okay with it, she just masturbates more often. A lot of the time Katniss likes to watch, so it works out.
5. How do their parenting styles conflict? If they don’t have children, do they argue about that? If neither wants children, how do their pet training styles conflict?
Johanna does not want kids. Full stop. Katniss kind of does, but her reasoning isn’t really solid. She doesn’t want kids because she wants small versions of herself or Johanna to love and care for, it’s more of a political move. She thinks it would look good. But she’s also aware enough to know that’s a shitty reason to have kids.
They do have a cat. Katniss hates the cat. Johanna is tolerant of the little beast, so tolerant that she will let it eat off the same plate at her or out of the same bowl.
6. What do they do that embarrasses each other (preferably in public)?
Johanna is a huge fan of PDA, almost entirely because it bothers Katniss so much.
~
Katniss has tried so many things to embarrass Johanna but nothing seems to work. She just has no shame. (Johanna was actually incredibly embarrassed the first time Katniss called her “honey” like it was something that happened all the time. Johanna called her bluff and Katniss hasn’t done it since. Johanna’s just glad she’s such a good actress.)
7. What do they do that makes the other jealous?
Johanna often falls into her post-games persona when she’s in public. She flirts purposefully and without shame. And even though Katniss knows it’s all a mask, it still hurts every time she sees Johanna take some other person’s arm and smile coyly at whatever they're saying.
~
People love Katniss. They see her as so noble and good. Johanna knows the truth about her, of course. She’s an awkward, unfriendly statue with very little personality other than being a prickly grump. But people see what they want to see, and they want Katniss for their hero, their Mockingjay, and so that’s what they get. Johanna wishes she had as much dedication to a role.
8. When was the last time they almost broke up? What was it over?
Neither of them had really had a relationship before each other. Katniss had her short-lived farce with Peeta, and Johanna had a few one night stands over the years. At first, they are completely terrible at being in a relationship. They’re so bad that they’re separated more than they’re together. Every event is a battle. Every fight is a breakup and then two days later their sucking face again.
The absolute last time this happens is when they’re trying to decide where to live, after everything. Twelve is a smoldering ruin, and Seven smells like shit, and the Capitol is…well, the Capitol. It’s a big, violent fight that really has more to do with their myriad of issues more than it does where they should live. Katniss is the one that says “I don’t think this is going to work out.” She also the one that leaves. She’s also the one that has some sense knocked into her by Haymitch and goes crawling back.
