Jonker 88
The 3rd place that we visited was Jonker 88. The small busy shop is located in the middle of Jonker Street and always flocks with tourists. It is a vintage style restaurant and the dining area inside is full of historical items to explore and look.
This place is like a self-service food court where customers have to find their own tables and queue up at the stalls to buy their food.
There are throngs of people standing by the tables to wait for seats without queuing. Since this is our first time being there, we first ordered food then later we couldn’t find a seat to enjoy our food so it took us about 15 minutes to get a table. Hence, as a gentle reminder, you should get a table first then order your food. There are two separated stalls that mainly sell noodles and dessert. They do charge GST in the price of their food. The menu for noodles stall is down below.
We had the two famous laksa that recommend by the stall called Special Jumbo Nyonya Asam Laksa and Special Jumbo Baba Laksa Kahwin Nyonya Asam Laksa.
The Nyonya Asam Laksa is similar to the Penang Laksa with asam broth but it tastes way too spicy as well. The Baba Laksa Kahwin Nyonya Asam Laksa which has a mixed broth from both Baba and Nyonya Laksa. That means it is the combination of curry laksa and asam laksa. The taste is more tend to curry laksa but the different is it has a sourish taste with the fragrance of coconut milk broth. So for those who can't eat spicy food, we recommend to try Baba Laksa Kahwin Nyonya Asam Laksa or the one we didn’t try, Baba Laksa that with coconut milk broth.
Special Jumbo Nyonya Asam Laksa (RM 10.50)
Special Jumbo Baba Laksa Kahwin Nyonya Asam Laksa (RM10.50)
The two laksa comes with thick beehoon that usually used in the Penang laksa and all laksa are served with same ingredients which include sardines, beancurd skin, egg, prawn, fish ball, onion and cucumber. For extra info, the regular size of those laksa is RM7 per bowl and special jumbo size is RM 10.50 per bowl excluded GST. Special jumbo size is enough for 2-3 persons to share.
The four of us had the different opinions toward our preferences. I myself prefer slightly sourish mixed broth laksa because I can’t take spicy but some of them prefer the spicy Nyonya asam laksa because it has a unique taste that different from the original Penang asam laksa. Overall, this popular tourist eatery is worth to check out for its nostalgic interiors and also its food.
