Just Do It

James 1:22-27

But be doers of the Word [obey the message], and not merely listeners to it, betraying yourselves [into deception by reasoning contrary to the Truth]. 23For if anyone only listens to the Word without obeying it and being a doer of it, he is like a man who looks carefully at his [own] natural face in a mirror; 24For he thoughtfully observes himself, and then goes off and promptly forgets what he was like. 25But he who looks carefully into the faultless law, the [law] of liberty, and is faithful to it and perseveres in looking into it, being not a heedless listener who forgets but an active doer [who obeys], he shall be blessed in his doing (his life of obedience). 26If anyone thinks himself to be religious (piously observant of the external duties of his faith) and does not bridle his tongue but deludes his own heart, this person's religious service is worthless (futile, barren). 27External religious worship [religion as it is expressed in outward acts] that is pure and unblemished in the sight of God the Father is this: to visit and help and care for the orphans and widows in their affliction and need, and to keep oneself unspotted and uncontaminated from the world.

Psalm 23 - The Name

The 23rd Psalm is one of the most famous and widely quoted pieces of literature on the planet. If you look at is closely it's easy to see why. David managed to elude to all 7 names of God in 6 verses. It's funny most people miss this because it is brought to light in the 3rd verse when he says "for His name's sake". It's amazing what you find when you seek wisdom like a great treasure. Let's take a look:

1 The LORD is my shepherd (YHWH-raah my shepard),    I shall not be in want (YHWH-jireh my provider).

2 He makes me lie down in green pastures(YHWH-jireh my provider),    he leads me beside quiet waters(YHWH-shalom my peace),

3 he restores my soul(YHWH-rapha my healer).    He guides me in paths of righteousness(YHWH-tskidkenu my righteousness)    for his name's sake.

4 Even though I walk    through the valley of the shadow of death,   I will fear no evil,    for you are with me;    your rod and your staff,    they comfort me (YHWH-shammah the ever-present).

5 You prepare a table before me    in the presence of my enemies (YHWH-nissi our banner).    You anoint my head with oil;    my cup overflows.

6 Surely goodness and mercy will follow me    all the days of my life,    and I will dwell in the house of the LORD    forever.

From the Top

There are chapters in the Bible I usally overlook. They tend to go something like this:  Name I can't pronounce, beget another name I can't pronounce, and had a son who's name I can't pronounce, and lived for 117 years... blah blah blah. You know how it is. It's like reading the attendance record for the Smith's family reunion. Genesis chapter 5 is a chapter just like that. It tells Adam's geneology all the way up to Noah. That's what I want to talk to you about. I will spare you all the begets and give you the low down on the names in that chapter, in order, and what those names mean. Here are the names, IN ORDER, and what they mean. Adam = Man Seth = Appointed Enos = Mortal Cainan = Sorrow Mahalel = The Blessed God Jared = Shall come down Enoch = teaching Methuselah = his death shall bring Lamech = despairing Noah = Comfort, Rest  Now i'd like to show you what that is saying: Man (is) appointed Mortal Sorrow (but) The blessed God Shall come down Teaching (and) His death shall bring (the) despairing Comfort (and) rest. You see God had this thing all worked out from the opening scene. The Bible has barely even started at this point and there is already one of the most beautiful pictures of God's plan to send His only son to die for you. So next time you decide to skip over a boring chapter like Genesis 5 make sure you look a little closer and let God reveal just how awesome His book is. P.S. I also think it's amazing that Methuselah's name means "his death shall bring" and the day he died the flood started. The thing that is so interesting is God allowed him to live longer than any other man (969 years). It's an awesome picture of God's grace, patients, and mercy.

Today Matters

"When opportunity comes the time for preparation has past." -John Wooden So many people go through life waiting for their "big break" only to miss it when it does come or not even realize it when it waves at them on the way by. This is due in part to not understanding that you only have now. If you don't take advantage of the only time you have control of then you'll never reach your potential. You may spend a lifetime waiting for a break you couldn't receive if it did come. Once opportunity arrives you've missed your chance to prepare. If you are spending time resenting where you are in life right now because it's not where you know you want to be and you know it's not what God has called you to then do what David did. While David was in the cave of Adullam, dangling at the end of his rope, he didn't grow bitter and complacent. Hiding from a man that held the position that God had anointed him to have didn't break David's spirit. David accepted that Adullam is a necessary class room in life, learned the lessons and welcomed the preparation necessary to come out of that cave with an army of mighty men larger than the entire kingdom of Israel. It's God's grace that is allowing you the time you need to learn the lessons it will take to receive everything that you know He's promised you. Throughout your day today I want you to think and pray about what it is you can do right now and what God needs to show you in your life that will help prepare you for the awesome promises and amazing future He has for you. Start in 1 Samuel 22 if you want to check out David's life in the cave of Adullam before God brought him out to rule Hebron and eventually the entire nation and everything else God promised to him.

Just This Time

We are not promised tomorrow. We can't change yesterday. If you've asked for forgiveness God doesn't even remember your mistakes from yesterday. Here is something that helps me stay disciplined and growing in every area of my life. I don't have to do the right thing all the time I just have to do the right thing this time. When you realize that you don't have to be intimidated by the future or held down by the past because all you can control is RIGHT NOW you will work harder, be more efficient, have more success holding down the flesh, and maybe even put that brownie down and go play some tennis.

Healing Mercy

Luke 18:38 38 And he cried, saying, Jesus, thou Son of David, have mercy on me. Psalms 145:8-9 8 The LORD is gracious, and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy. 9 The LORD is good to all: and his tender mercies are over all his works. Micah 7:18 He delighteth in mercy. Psalm 103:2-3 Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases; 2 Chron. 16:9 For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him. We have forgotten how far reaching the mercy of God is in the church today. There was a certain blind man on the way to Jericho that was is yelling something to Jesus that we have largely forgotten. Son of David, have MERCY on me! God's mercy extends far beyond your salvation. The Lord yearns to give you every gift that Jesus died on the cross for. It is not just salvation that He wants you to have so badly; it is life more abundantly. Bosworth said, "Is God now more willing to show the mercy of forgiveness to the devils children than he is to show the mercy of healing to his own?" The word says that, "his tender mercies are over all his works." When we begin to come to a realization and revelation of God's will not just his ability we will see the things we have been longing for. I's not the revelation of what God can do or is able to do that builds faith. It is the revelation of what God wants and yearns to do that builds faith. God wants to heal you more than you want to be healed. He's already made the provision for it so of course He wants and desires to give it to you. Kenneth Hagin said, "It's not faith in his power that secures your blessing it is faith in his love and his will." A lot of people know that He is able and has the power. The Devil knows He is able. In our modern thinking we've forgotten that He is willing and merciful to do it. I'm here to tell you today that the eyes of the Lord still run to and fro throughout the whole earth and He is looking for people to pour out His tender healing mercies on.
