Do people ever think about how privileged they are? Have they ever?

Have you ever seen boats float out in the sea, how they sway to the rhythm of the waves, the salty smell lulling you to sleep, while the wind fights to keep you awake? That 's how you feel. You feel lost. You feel lonely. You don't know where to go, and even though there's a side of you that wants to disappear, there's also a part of you that wants to keep herself with her eyes wide open. You used to take things for granted. You take things for granted. You take for granted having a roof, having food, being alive. You wish you didn't.

Three weeks ago everything seemed remotely fine, your aunt had been nothing but energetic, physically able to provide for you both, but as the days went by everything changed. The darkness that surrounded her eyes were becoming more concerning, the color of her skin became pale and consequently by other more causes, she was left bed ridden for days. You knew what it was. It was obvious. Syphilis, advanced.

As you tried to check on her and bring her to her senses about coming forward for treatment, she did nothing but refuse.

“It's too late now anyways” She would say, as It would spare her a justification.

And It drove you mad. How dare she be this selfish and leave you alone, and in the meantime of her companionship, waiting for death to knock at your door. It was no surprise though, sooner or later it would have happened regarding her line of work.

“Who am I staying with now, aunty? Hmm? How can I take care of myself If I can't even take care of you now? You die and then what? What will it become of me?” There was a mature childishness in your statement, wondering how to be selfish with the selfishest person you have ever met. You both were in no position to afford treatment, and once she died, then no penny would enter your shitty household. No food to eat, no money to pay for a roof. It has always been you and her, so when she leaves, there will be just you, just you to provide for yourself, alone, with no one by your side.

“You can start working” Your aunt said as a matter of fact.

“Where? Who would hire me? I'm eighteen, I have no work history, nothing.” She looked at you boredly, as if you should already know the answer.

“You know where, dont be stupid. Where else would they hire you?” It came as a surprise though, coming from her at least.

“You think I'm made for that?”

“No one is made for it. So what? You have to eat, you have to live. What else is there to take into consideration?”

So I will ask again.
