Gracias a esos atributos…

Average Athlete of the Week: Jose Offerman
This past weekend I was in Las Vegas and I made it back to New York alive. Gin, tonic, gambling and a strange encounter with a “working woman” highlighted a weekend of debauchery. Thank god I’m back to civilization.
In other news, welcome to the baseball season. Beer, fried chicken, and tobacco will be in full effect and damn, it feels good to be American. When I sat down to write this bit, there…

When Baseball Bats Attack
Last night, in the top of the seventh inning of a Cuban baseball game, after Eriel Sanchez lead off with a home run, pitcher Freddy Alvarez hit Yasiel Santoya. Two batters later, a 17-year-old top Cuban prospect by the name of Victor Mesa, Jr was hit and that's when all insanity broke out.
Demis Valdes, sitting on the bench, runs onto the field, baseball bat in hand and comes out swinging for the pitcher, Alvarez. Somehow, fortunately, no one was hurt, perhaps Alvarez's thrown glove saving his head from being bashed from the big swing. Click over to Baseball America for more details on the fight.
And while we can sit back and enjoy this fight for the sheer spectacle of it, safely removed from it and with no players getting hurt, just remember how easily this could have taken a much different turn. Like when Jose Offerman attacked the pitcher in an Atlantic League game. Rather than connecting with the pitcher, Offerman hit the catcher, John Nathans, in the head with his backswing. The fight ended Nathans' career and, stranger still, Jose Offerman hasn't been found to be served with discovery papers in the $4.8 million lawsuit.
Okay, well, maybe that's not strange. If I had a $4.8 million lawsuit pending against me, I'd probably be difficult to track down, too.
Anyway, there will be real baseball soon and we won't have to get our fix watching people fight on the diamond.
