So I wrote this, and then I read on my earlier post about doing it that there was already a story based on the picture... I decided to publish it anyway since it would just be sitting on my computer. I didn’t read the other story so I have no idea how it would compare to mine.
`
Gabriel had been the black sheep of his family since the moment his feet touched the ground. His two older brothers were Mike and Luke, two of the most troublesome teens their neighborhood had ever seen, and most of the time they were fighting each other enough to make Gabe hide out in his room. His father and mother were both loving but with the jobs they led they were hardly ever around.
Being that he was his own company most of the time, Gabriel’s imagination grew as childhood seemed to stay firmly grasped in his head. Sci-fi movies were his favorite, comics with farfetched stories that would bring him out of his own dull world and into one of explosive color. As the years passed he never grew out of the fairytales he had loved as a child. When Luke and Mike ventured to college and careers, Gabriel went to school for art and became an illustrator. Most of the time he had to do odd end jobs for local businesses, but he was on the verge of publishing his own children’s book.
So when the phone call came on an uneventful Tuesday night, Gabriel dropped the marker on his newest strip of comic and made his way toward what would be a turning point in his career. He picked up on the third ring.
“Gabriel Shurley.” Gabe rolled his eyes at the uniform sound of it. If this wasn’t his business phone he’d answer with something like, ‘City Morgue, Frankenstein speaking’.
“Oh.” A slight pause. “Um-it’s late.”
“Yes it is.” Gabe rolled his eyes but kept himself polite. “What is this call regarding?”
“Sorry, I just thought I’d get the machine. I-um-was wondering if you could design a poster for me?” The voice was deep but riddled with an almost shy excitement that made Gabe smile a little.
“What kind of poster?” He hadn’t done posters since he made them to sell on the streets to keep his fridge stocked.
“Well I saw some of yours around the Stanford campus, mostly for bands and stuff, but when I went to your website it said that you can do them of anything. So-uh-I have this long running joke with my brother about farfetched stories and such, and I was wondering if you could make me a poster of some of the stories.”
“I don’t know-“
“My father raised us.” The man took a deep sigh as he delved into the story behind the need for a poster. “He was a marine so it was a very strict household. We were practically adults before all our adult teeth even came in. So-um-it may sound stupid but we told those stories to each other to-yknow-keep up the childhood. It meant a lot to us… I guess that sounds weird. Anyway, he just kind of hit a rock… and I wanted to cheer him up. This sounds stupid.”
“Not at all.” Gabriel smiled wider a the sincere reasoning. “You want to recreate that happiness, as brief and make believe as it was, to cheer up your brother. It isn’t stupid at all. Definitely more meaningful than some of the other ones I have done. What do you want on the poster?”
“We liked the stories of alien abduction… and the ones about alligators in the sewers… are you sure this isn’t stupid?” The man’s voice was even more shy now, wavering on regretful.
“Aliens and alligators? Sounds like fun. Is this number the one I should call when I am done?” Gabriel felt giddiness bubble in his fingertips for the first time in a long time.
“Yeah. You’re really going to do it?”
“Of course. Should take me a couple days, four tops.”
“Thanks. You have no idea how cool this is going to be. I’m Sam Winchester, by the way.”
“Well, Sam, when it is done I’ll give you a ring. I’ll probably just mail it to you-“
“It says here you live like ten minutes from Lawrence?”
Gabriel squinted at the remark until he remembered that his base for operations is on his website. “Yes.”
“I live in Lawrence. So I think it would just be easier and cheaper to come get it from you. If that’s okay?”
“That’s perfectly fine.”
“Great. Okay. Talk to you in a few days?” Sam’s voice had risen from shy to exuberant.
“In a few days. Bye.”
Just as he hung up, Gabriel tossed the phone and almost ran to his studio table. Tonight would be long, but he figured the sooner he got it done the happier it would make this precious man, a man who wanted a poster of alligators and aliens just to cheer up his brother.
`
It took three days and almost all of Gabe’s time to finish the poster. As he stood back, with his phone in hand, he grinned at the paper and fell in love. It was even better knowing that it was going to a good home. Gabriel didn’t waste any time dialing Sam’s number and waiting anxiously as the rings filled his ears.
“Hello?” Sam’s voice was a little rough.
“Hey. This is Gabriel Shurley-“
“Oh my God, I almost forgot about it! Is it done?” All at once the roughness was gone and Gabe almost thought he was talking with a young boy.
“Yeah.” Gabe chuckled as he ran his fingers through his hair. “Alligators and aliens. I put a little twist on it.”
“This is so awesome. I can’t wait till Dean sees it. Can we meet up tomorrow? He has… a thing the day after and the poster would be great to have in my living room when he comes over after it. Holy shit, he is going to freak out.” Sam giggled through the phone. “You are like the greatest person in the entire world.”
Gabriel grinned until he felt his cheeks split. “Don’t get too carried away with the compliments. And tomorrow is fine, I am free all day.”
“Ok. Great. How about the park right on the outskirts of Lawrence? Maybe around noon?”
“Sounds good. I’ll see you then.” Gabriel hung up before he could say anything else. As he stared at the poster he realized that maybe the reason he had worked so hard was that he might have developed a crush on the mysterious voice of Sam Winchester.
`
The park was practically empty. Gabriel tugged his beanie on tighter and watched as a fit couple jogged breathlessly past him. He was never the type for working out, more into sitting at home with a pencil and paper. But the fresh air was nice and so was the idea that soon he would be meeting Sam Winchester. The mysterious owner seemed to be a childish goof just like himself, and that gave Gabriel hope that maybe he could make a friend. It wasn’t everyday someone asked for alligators and aliens.
“Gabriel Shurley?” A deep voice came from behind him.
Startled, Gabriel spun on his heel and sucked in a breath at the giant of a man standing before him. Sam was gorgeous, as gorgeous as Gabriel had ever seen or would wish to ever see. Although the height thing was insane, Gabriel couldn’t help but blush under those wondrous eyes and the wavy boyish hair that blew lightly in the wind.
“Uh-yeah.” Gabe’s mind finally came back to itself. “That’s me.”
Sam’s face broke out into a knee-wobbling smile full of pearly white teeth. “I’m Sam.”
A few seconds passed, just the two of them staring at each other, before Gabriel shook his head and reached into his messenger bag for the poster roll. As he held it out he noticed his hand was shaking and he prayed Sam didn’t notice.
“I don’t know if it is exactly what you wanted, but it’s pretty good I think.” Gabriel watched as Sam took hold of it and unraveled it, holding his breath like a promise was being wavered in front of his eyes.
As the poster unrolled and was held outstretched before Sam, Gabe could see the light spark behind those marvelous eyes. “This is fucking amazing. ‘Alligators in Space!’ is perfect. Dean is going to lose his mind. It brings back so much… to actually see it illustrated is mindblowing.” Sam glanced over at Gabriel with a more reserved smile. “How much do I owe you?”
All at once Gabriel felt cheap and used. He had already worked up in his mind that the two of them were friends, even though he knew this was only business, so the knot in his gut was his own foolish fault. “No charge. I just hope it makes your brother feel better.”
He was about to turn and never see Sam again when a hand wrapped around his shoulder. Their eyes met as Sam eyed over the poster one more time before bringing their eyes together again. “Uh-yknow-it’s my lunch break. I couldn’t let you give this to me free of charge, not with how great it is, so why don’t you let me buy you lunch?”
Gabriel’s heart beat almost painfully against his bones. “Okay.”
Sam ducked his head with a smile. “Cool.”
`
Gabe was brought back into reality by the gentle snoring above his head. Most nights he could manage to sleep through it, but others his boyfriend was just too loud. As he blinked away the fogginess of slumber and lifted his head, he saw that there was a red imprint of his face against his boyfriend’s bare chest.
With a short snort, Gabriel lifted his eyes up past the sleeping man’s face to rest on the poster that hung in their living room.
“Gabe?” The snoring paused as arms wound themselves tight around his lower back.
“Go back to sleep, Sam.” Gabe buried his face back against the warm beating chest and closed his eyes with a smile. “Too tired to be awake.”
“Mmm.” Sam smacked his lips a couple times. “Love you.”
