What she says: I’m fine.
What she means: Joseph Christiansen deserves so much better than the fandom boiling him down to an unfinished and cut “cult ending.” His Good Ending was the most real and human of all the other dads’. Not every love story is running off into the sunset with your soulmate. Sometimes feelings are grungy and hard to slog through and harder to make sense of. Long standing relationships are difficult to break out of--to try to convince yourself you “don’t” love this person you’ve been with for years when you so obviously do--and that goes double if it’s an abusive relationship on top of that. I mean, at some point he had to love Mary because he married her so, yes, he probably still loves her. And they have four kids together! I don’t imagine it’s easy to drop the Mother of Your Children. Ugh. Joseph Christiansen deserves more love and support not demonizing.
