@galerieperrotin @JoshSperling’s (b.1985) “Big Time” #JoshSperling has adapted his signature vocabulary of forms to the expansive architecture of #GaleriePerrotin New York’s 3rd floor gallery. Swirling forms entwine, shapes—regular & organic—eclipse each other in what he calls “composites” or clusters of shaped canvases, as “squiggles” writhe & overtake entire walls. Sperling’s work draws on the language of #Minimalist painting fr the 60s & 70s, with shaped canvases as his main recourse. For these, he crafts intricate plywood supports over which canvas is stretched & painted over in a signature palette of saturated, sometimes clashing colors. In their three-dimensionality, Sperling’s works blur the lines between painting & sculpture, image & object. Mining a wide range of sources, fr design to art history, Josh Sperling has crafted a unique visual vocabulary remarkable for its expressive quality & irrepressible energy. Sperling’s work, now recognizable for his particular brand of chromatic geometry, offers pop minimalist confections on a newly expanded scale his own take on the Zero art movement of 1960s & 1970s, artists like Lucio Fontana, Enrico Castellani, Piero Manzoni, Turi Simeti & Agostino Bonalumi. Take, for instance, the squiggle wall produced by Sperling entitled “Hokus Pokus” an edge-to-edge composition of snaking forms which takes a 15 x 17 foot wall as its host & support. Increasingly, Sperling’s work addresses the architecture in which it is exhibited, this show is no exception to this new direction for the artist.
