Do you think Akane has any true friends? I know she cares about Ginoza and maybe loves him in some way, and Yuki, but do you think she could talk to them about anything?

I would consider Gino a true friend of hers. It’s different when you work with someone though, and when the majority of your relationship is defined by that workplace and both of your actions within it. However, I don’t doubt he’d always have her back no matter how personal. 

Yuki and Kaori both were (are in Kaori’s case) friends. However, Kaori can never truly understand her, and she and Akane are bound to drift apart with the former getting married. It’s not a bad thing--just something that tends to happen. Kaori has her own life, her own career, and her husband. They’ll probably have children and her old best friend with a mysterious life won’t be her first priority.

Interestingly I think from these listed, Gino has a far better chance of understanding her and being her confidant.

She has Gino. She has Saiga as a mentor and what we might call a “listener.” She doesn’t really have a choice but to be transparent with him, which might be a positive in her case.

I would argue the same can be said with Ko.

Ko’s more of a “friend” with a deliberate emphasis on the quotation marks. He certainly understands her. Like Gino, he’s seen her at her worst and her best, but I think he knows her in a way that Gino doesn’t quite. I think truthfully, he’s the only one she has no barrier at all. 

Shion and Yayoi are wonderful, too. Of those two, I think it’s obvious she’s much closer with Shion, and Shion’s personality in general is more open and inviting.

She could talk about anything with Gino, but I don’t think she would.

She would with Ko.

What do you think is Saiga’s interest in Akane?

That’s an interesting question. I’m not sure the extent of it, but in general, Saiga has an interest in people, their behavior, and minds. I’m not sure his interest in her is so different than Sibyl’s, though his isn’t malicious. Her hue doesn’t cloud. She’s a quick learner, a thinker, and is highly adaptable to the situation at hand (whatever it may be). She’s a good and willing student, and the two of them can have thoughtful, complex discussions. I suspect that just as Saiga is a good teacher, he sees himself as a student and believes he can always learn from others. I’m sure he finds her fascinating, and Ko’s apparent faith in her no doubt made Saiga’s interest in her even greater. 

I think she might be something of a mystery to him, just as she is to Sibyl. Saiga wouldn’t be much of an intellectual if he didn’t take an interest in her, especially considering how easily he reads and predicts what others may do. Akane’s been raised in Sibyl’s society yet is an anomaly in her independence of thought and will. What exactly he expects to learn from–or about–her or if it’s mere curiosity remains to be seen.
