"National Charter" Colin Snapp
Opening Wednesday November 6 6 – 9 PM Gallery Hours Tuesday – Sunday 12 – 6 PM
The Journal Gallery is pleased to announce “National Charter,” the gallery’s third solo exhibition with Los Angeles based artist Colin Snapp. In this exhibition, the artist presents 18 pictures from his Emblem Series, a new selection of works derived from an ongoing photographic index. Started in 2008, this series developed as a desire to reinterpret the landscape of advertisements surrounding us. Incorporating the environments in which these emblems are embedded, Snapp offers the logos a new meaning, one that deals with divisions of associative realities—specifically, how one often becomes overly comfortable with such visual archetypes. The majority of the images in “National Charter” were made while traveling, lending a certain everyday narrative to the project that is indicative of Snapp’s interest in using photography and video as tools to re-contextualize the contemporary landscape.
Colin Snapp was born in 1982 in Washington state and lives and works in Los Angeles, California. Earlier this year Snapp had a solo exhibition, "NV Regional” at Unosunove Galleria, Rome, Italy. Recent group shows include, “356 Sculptures,” 356 S. Mission Rd., Los Angeles, California; ”Christian Rosa/Colin Snapp,” Ibid Projects (off-site), Los Angeles, California; “Eagles,” Malborough Gallery, Madrid, Spain; “Discovering Slowness,” nm.2, Bratislava, Slovakia; “NanoMacroMega,” UC San Diego, La Jolla, California and “Its Endless Undoing,” Thierry Goldberg Gallery, New York, New York. In 2012, Snapp was commissioned to create a video work dealing with surveillance within Yellowstone National Park. He presented the project at the Odeon in Vienna as part of the opening performance of VIENNAFAIR 2012. Snapp’s upcoming exhibitions are “Colin Snapp,” Park, Tilburg, The Netherlands, and “Intra Terrestrial,” Ibid Projects, London, UK.
