It's weird how in a couple of years sonic in a Nintendo game went from being this enormous deal to just business as usual. Sonic in smash felt like such an event at the time
I feel like that's a side effect of the olympics games more than anything else. Not only have there been a lot of those since Brawl came out, they've run the gamut of "somewhat enjoyable" to "I'd have more fun waiting in line at the DMV."
Sort of kills the magic when Sonic and Mario are getting into a foot race and it's legitimately suggested Sonic could ever lose, and that happens repeatedly, every 2-3 years, for over a decade.
In the time we had two Smash Bros. games, we had six Olympics games. If there was ever a way to beat the magic out of something special, it's to imbue it with all the thrill of a regularly scheduled dentist check-up.
