#repost @queenyonasda ・・・ Growing up and being #NativeAmerican and #Black and being raised by my #Native mother, at times when I would see my mother and my aunts get ready with their long hair and beautiful jewelry and regalia I would ask my mother "Mommie how come my skin isn't the same as yours? Or how come my hair is sooo curly? Why can't I look like you all ?" My mother would always answer "you are beautiful! You have beautiful skin which is a mixture of me and your daddy's love, your hair is magic hair cuz when it's wet it turns into a whole 'nother style, when you go into the sun it gets browner and redder than my skin!" Even though I struggled with the whole light skin vs dark skin amongst my Black peers and family and then I struggled with the whole "is that your mother? Are you adopted by her?" Or boys that I liked in high school would always tell me "man I wish you looked more like your mother!" All of these things did have me crying, feeling less than, lonely etc. but my mother strived soooooo hard to make sure I was proud of who I am! The color of my skin!!! She never made me feel less Native nor Black!! She ALWAYS made sure I learned about the Native tribes of the U.S. I always learned about the tribes of Africa!! She always made sure no one would dictate who I am but for me to dictate to them who I am and who the Creator blessed me to be!!! I'm sharing this testimony because being a woman is hard, being a Native woman is hard, being a Black woman is hard, but being all 3 can be harder especially when you don't fit into a "box" people try to put you in! Today yes I do deal with certain insecurities especially the platform God is blessing me with, but the words of my mother secures me that I AM MAGIC!! I may not be the most beautifulest but I am perfectly created by God and so are you!!
