Day 12 #journeyjune22 Magic Mentor 🪄 They were still very far from the foot of the mountains, but the training continued with each stop for rest. Eyris pushed herself through the fatigue and aching muscles. Little by little she was finding that the weight of her sword was slightly easier to bear. But both she and Maethild agreed that her swings were still lacking. — “Come, Eyvind. Take a break and eat.” Maethild held out a small wooden bowl laden with a simple stew of the game they hunted. Eyris was still catching her breath and her knees wobbled, but she kept her grip tight. “Suit yourself. But your training will go nowhere on an empty belly.” The taller woman shrugged. Eyris sighed and relented, letting her blade fall and taking the offered bowl. Both women sat by the fire and ate in silence save for the atmospheric sounds of the fields. — Eyris chewed slowly. And with her second spoonful she felt as if a newfound vigor was flowing from her belly to her limbs. “What…is in this?” She clenched and opened her hand, wriggling her fingers as if the aches and fatigue dissipated. Maethild chuckled and shook her head. “Nothing unusual, I promise, lad. Just rabbit and what herbs I could forage around here. Perhaps it’s the wolf’s cress? I’m surprised I found some around here. Gives almost a flavor like lemon, doesn’t it?” — Eyris pushed her spoon around until she found anything green. “It’s…it’s good.” She nodded. “Thank you.” She finished her bowl and quickly returned to her training. Day 4 #journeyjune22 ❗️CW: mentions of blood❗️ Eyris’s accompanying guards urged her to stay close as they maneuvered through the burning ruins to escape. But they were met with much resistance. The Princess kept her blade close and it seemed, even when she had wielded it many times during training- it felt heavier. And while she wore gloves, she felt as if it would slip from her trembling grasp. How she wished she was better trained. ⚔️ She was met with more misfortune as enemies surrounded and separated them. And she was seized by the enemies’s battle mages. As they razed the castle, a painted portrait of the ruling family had not gone unnoticed. There was child and they had found her. ⚔️ Their lord had ordered his armies to eliminate the entire line. The battle mages followed through. But after slaying the king and queen, the commanding sorcerer gouged out their eyes, believing they held great magical power when eaten. Spoiler: they don’t. ⚔️ And so Princess Eyris was dragged into a cell and held down onto a table, crying out with futile struggling. One heavy handed soldier held her head still and they endured the princess’s deafening cry as her right eye was gouged. ⚔️ “Keep her alive still. She may still have some use.” As the dagger closed in on her left, it suddenly dropped, followed by a croaking groan. The sorcerer had been destroyed by a magical blast. ⚔️ The accompanying foes followed his fate. Day 3 #journeyjune22 🔥 Eyris, with her small entourage return from a fairly successful hunt. She’d have boasted about her hunt to the guard’s captain, her governess, and her parents…had they lived through the ambush from enemies who bided their time. 🔥 Instead, Eyris returned to a burning castle and the surrounding town. Survivors wailed and scrambled from the fires, barely heeding the princess as she frantically wove her way to the castle. 🔥 The few who were with her urged her not to enter for fear she’d succumb to the fires or the assassins that remain lurking. 🔥 But she ran in, barely holding on to any hope of her family’s survival. And she was faced with the corpses of her kin, the blood still fresh even from the heat of the fires. 🔥 Numb with grief, Eyris was led from the castle by her surviving guards. “They’re gone, Princess. You must fight. Or flee.” The Princess, while well trained with sword, shield, and bow has only faced practice dummies and local fauna. Never has she faced a real foe…and she was frightened. And overcome with grief. Day 2 #journeyjune22 Eyris can only train within the castle grounds for so long. And with energy still pent up, she slips on some gear for- what she calls a “quick hunting trip”. With her history- they’re never shorter and she’d return past dusk. 🏹 Though, it was already past noon. And despite the protests of her governess and several servants,Eyris sets off- though not without a trusted guard to accompany her. 🏹 Wherever there’s families of nobility, peril lurks. Of course, the rulers are very much aware of the dangers that come with such ranks and keep their guard sharp. It’s not uncommon for maiden nobles to take up arms where she’s from, and many earn renown. But Eyris isn’t exactly looking to be any kind of champion.
